BYD has given its hugely popular Song Pro DM-i compact plug-in hybrid SUV a major range upgrade. The new Long-Range (“Flying”) Edition, launched in April 2026, more than doubles the electric-only range to as much as 301 km (CLTC) and lifts total combined range to 1,735 km — a big jump over the older 133 km version. It does this with a much bigger 34.27 kWh Blade battery and faster charging, while keeping the same efficient 1.5-litre DM-i powertrain, low 3.2 L/100 km fuel use and bargain pricing. The Song Pro lineup still starts at around ¥99,900 (~$14,650) for the 220 km base trim, with the new 301 km long-range versions from roughly ¥115,900 (~$17,000). It's one of the most affordable ways to get this much electric range in a family SUV.
Performance & Specs
The Song Pro DM-i keeps BYD's proven DM-i plug-in hybrid system: a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine making 74 kW (101 hp) acts mainly as a generator and cruiser, while a front electric motor producing 120 kW (161 hp) and 210 Nm drives the front wheels. It's tuned for efficiency rather than speed, with a 0–100 km/h of around 8.4 seconds and a 180 km/h top speed. The big change is the battery: the new Long-Range Edition adds a 34.27 kWh Blade LFP pack (up from 18.3 kWh on the old 133 km car, and bigger than the 26.6 kWh used on the 220 km trims), delivering up to 301 km of pure-electric CLTC range. With the engine topping things up, combined range reaches 1,735 km, and fuel use sits at just 3.2 L/100 km once the battery is depleted.

The Song Pro DM-i is a practical compact family SUV. At 4,735 mm long on a 2,712 mm wheelbase, it seats five comfortably and offers a useful 530-litre boot with the rear seats up, expanding to 1,482 litres when they're folded. There's a 52-litre fuel tank — the key to that 1,735 km combined range — and ground clearance of over 200 mm for rough roads. It rides on 18-inch wheels with 225/60 R18 tyres. The long-range version doesn't change the practical, family-friendly packaging; it simply adds a much bigger battery underneath.

Charging & Battery
The headline upgrade is the battery. The Long-Range Edition uses a 34.27 kWh Blade LFP pack — nearly double the 18.3 kWh of the old 133 km Song Pro DM-i, and larger than the 26.6 kWh fitted to the 220 km trims. That's what unlocks the 301 km of electric range. Charging is also much faster: DC fast charging now runs at up to 74 kW (versus roughly 18 kW before), with AC home charging around 7 kW for an overnight top-up in three to five hours. As a plug-in hybrid, most owners will run it almost entirely on electricity day to day, with the 1.5-litre engine and 52-litre tank there for worry-free long trips.

| AC CHARGING | ~7 kW (3–5 hours) |
Design & Interior
The Song Pro DM-i keeps its clean, mainstream SUV look, with only minor light-signature tweaks for 2026. Up front there's a body-colour closed nose with a functional lower grille (for engine cooling), full-LED headlights and a BYD wordmark, while the rear gets a full-width connected LED tail-light bar and a 360-degree camera. It's offered in straightforward colours like the white shown. Inside, the cabin is simple and practical, built around the rotating 15.6-inch central touchscreen and an 8.8-inch driver display, with BYD's DiLink software, a multi-function steering wheel and sensible storage. It's not luxurious, but it's spacious, well-equipped for the price, and easy to live with.
Technology & Features
The dashboard centres on BYD's signature 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen running the DiLink smart cockpit, paired with an 8.8-inch driver display, connected navigation, voice control and over-the-air updates. On the driver-assistance front, the Flying Edition comes with God's Eye C (BYD's vision-based system) as standard, supporting city and highway navigation assist and automated parking. Buyers wanting more can option the LiDAR-equipped God's Eye B (DiPilot 300) package for around ¥9,900 — advanced assisted-driving hardware that's rare at this price point.
Safety & ADAS
The Song Pro DM-i comes with a surround-view camera, parking sensors and BYD's standard active-safety suite, plus high-speed tyre-blowout stability control. God's Eye C assisted driving is standard, with the option to upgrade to the LiDAR-based God's Eye B for navigation-assisted driving. The Blade LFP battery also brings BYD's well-regarded thermal stability to the safety story.
| ADAS LEVEL | L2 (God's Eye C std / God's Eye B LiDAR optional) |
|---|---|
| ADAS FEATURES | City & highway NOA, auto parking, 360° camera, blowout stability, LiDAR (optional) |

Pricing & Availability
The upgraded Song Pro DM-i Long-Range (“Flying”) Edition launched in China in April 2026. The overall lineup starts at around ¥99,900 (~$14,650) for the 220 km base trim, while the new 301 km long-range versions run from roughly ¥115,900 to ¥129,900 (~$17,000–$19,050). (Note the headline ~$14,650 entry price applies to the 220 km car, not the 301 km long-range model.) It's a China-market vehicle, sold through BYD's Dynasty network, and continues to be one of the brand's best-selling family SUVs.
How It Compares
The Song Pro DM-i's closest rival is BYD's own Sealion 05 DM-i, which shares the same 34.27 kWh battery and ~305 km EV range — the two essentially overlap, with the Song Pro being the more conventional, established nameplate. The Geely Galaxy Starship 7 EM-i undercuts both slightly on price but tops out at just 200 km of EV range, while the Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV offers only around 90 km. With up to 301 km of electric range and 1,735 km combined for the money, the long-range Song Pro is one of the most range-efficient budget family SUVs you can buy.
- Up to 301 km EV range — more than double the old version
- 1,735 km combined range and just 3.2 L/100km fuel use
- DiSus-C suspension standard; optional LiDAR ADAS
- Excellent value — lineup from ~$14,650
- The 301 km trims cost more (~$17,000+), not the headline price
- Front-wheel drive only, modest performance
- Basic cabin materials and China-only availability
The Long-Range Song Pro DM-i is a smart, low-cost upgrade that fixes the old car's biggest limitation. By dropping in a 34.27 kWh battery, BYD has more than doubled the electric range to 301 km and pushed combined range to 1,735 km — while keeping the same efficient powertrain, low 3.2 L/100km fuel use and bargain pricing. The 301 km trims aren't quite the headline ~$14,650 figure (that's the 220 km base), but at around $17,000 they're still outstanding value for this much electric range, now with DiSus-C suspension as standard and optional LiDAR. For budget-minded families who want maximum electric commuting plus genuine long-distance ability, it's hard to beat — even if BYD's own Sealion 05 DM-i offers much the same thing.
