The NIO ES8 has been the brand's runaway hit since its September 2025 launch — over 90,000 units delivered by April 2026 alone, making it NIO's best-selling model ever. Now the flagship full-size electric SUV gets its biggest update yet: a brand-new five-seat version that trades the third row for a cavernous cargo bay, and quietly debuts NIO's first in-house, self-developed autonomous-driving chip. Every ES8 — five, six, or seven-seat — still shares the same 900V architecture, a 520 kW (697 hp) dual-motor powertrain, and NIO's signature battery-swap network, but now starts even lower, at just $40,400 with the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) plan.
Performance & Specs
Every ES8 variant runs the same dual-motor all-wheel-drive layout: a permanent-magnet motor up front paired with an induction motor at the rear, for a combined 520 kW (697 hp) and 700 Nm of torque. That's enough to launch the nearly 2.5-tonne SUV from 0-100 km/h in 3.97 seconds — supercar-adjacent numbers for a six-seat family flagship — with the top speed electronically capped at 220 km/h. The whole package sits on NIO's NT3.0 global 900V platform with an 89% aluminum-alloy body structure, which keeps weight in check despite the size. The five-seat model uses the identical powertrain but sheds the third row, and its lighter, more aerodynamic packaging nudges CLTC range up slightly to 655 km versus 635 km for the six/seven-seat versions.

| Wheelbase | 3,130 mm |
| Ground clearance | ~170 mm (+35 mm via air suspension) |
At 5,280 mm long on a 3,130 mm wheelbase, the ES8 is a genuinely full-size SUV, and the new five-seat layout turns that length into serious cargo capacity: dropping the third row entirely gives a claimed 1,334 litres of boot space, expanding to 3,084 litres with the second row folded — more than double what most three-row rivals offer. The six/seven-seat versions trade some of that for extra passenger capacity, with 547 litres behind the third row. Every configuration keeps NIO's segment-leading 230-litre frunk — NIO itself claims this beats the NIO ES9's own 216-litre frunk. Standard air suspension with rear-wheel steering rides on 22-inch wheels wrapped in 275/40 R22 Pirelli rubber, and ground clearance can be raised by 35 mm for rough surfaces.

Charging & Battery
Every ES8 runs a standard 102 kWh CATL NMC battery on NIO's 900V architecture, with a larger 120 kWh pack supporting 5C charging announced for later in 2026. DC fast charging takes the pack from 10-80% in roughly 12 minutes, while AC charging tops out at 11 kW for home use. The real party trick remains NIO's Power Swap network — over 2,500 stations across China can swap a depleted pack for a full one in 3-5 minutes, a use case no rival in this segment can match.
| BATTERY | 102 kWh CATL NMC (900V) |
|---|---|
| AC CHARGING | 11 kW |
| DC FAST CHARGING | 10-80% in ~12 min |
| BATTERY SWAP | 3-5 min full pack swap, 2,500+ stations (China) |
Design & Interior
The ES8's exterior mixes double-decker crystal-pattern LED headlights, flush door handles and a full-width rear LED light bar for a clean, understated luxury look — a class-leading 0.25 Cd drag coefficient backs up the aerodynamic styling. Inside is where the ES8 makes its real case against German rivals: every seat is trimmed in genuine Nappa leather (not synthetic), with an Alcantara dashboard and headliner. The front and second-row seats — NIO calls them "Feihang" zero-gravity seats — get 20-way power adjustment plus heating, ventilation, massage and memory as standard; the third row on six/seven-seat models gets heating only. A 1.7 square-meter electrochromic panoramic roof offers three-stage dimming, there's an 8.8-litre powered smart fridge in the center console, and four-zone climate control with full-cabin air purification rounds out the comfort kit. It's the kind of feature list that would cost tens of thousands more on a BMW X7 or Mercedes GLS options list.
Technology & Features
The cabin runs NIO's Banyan OS on Qualcomm Snapdragon silicon, with the animated NOMI voice assistant mounted on the dashboard and a wide horizontal display strip feeding a central touchscreen (the newer 5-seat model swaps in a four-screen setup anchored by a 21.4-inch Mini-LED display). A large 38-inch AR head-up display projects speed, navigation and ADAS overlays directly onto the windshield, so drivers rarely need to glance down at the instrument cluster. Audio comes from NIO's in-house "Tianqin" LYRA 8.1.4.2 system — 27 speakers (including a dedicated subwoofer channel) driven by 2,600 watts, with Dolby Atmos and Dirac spatial-audio processing plus a roof-mounted center speaker for genuinely immersive sound, a setup NIO itself compares favorably to what you'd find in a Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Dual wireless phone chargers, full English UI out of the box, and continuous OTA updates for both software and ADAS round out the package.
Safety & ADAS
The original six/seven-seat ES8 runs L2++ NOP+ assisted driving (point-to-point and urban navigation) on a 33-sensor suite anchored by a single roof LiDAR and four NVIDIA Orin-X chips for 1,016 TOPS combined. The new five-seat version goes further, debuting NIO's self-developed 5nm "Shenqi" NX9031 chip paired with a beefed-up 31-sensor array that includes three roof-mounted LiDAR units — a genuine hardware upgrade over the launch-spec car, and NIO's first production use of its own silicon instead of third-party Nvidia hardware. Both versions add Automatic Emergency Steering at up to 130 km/h, automated parking, and a 360-degree "transparent chassis" camera view, with a full airbag set including third-row curtain coverage on the six/seven-seat cars.

Pricing & Availability
The original six/seven-seat ES8 launched in China on September 20, 2025 (NIO Day), with deliveries starting the next day; it hit 50,000 units by mid-January 2026 and crossed 90,000 deliveries by April 3, 2026, making it NIO's fastest-selling model ever. The all-new five-seat version launched July 9, 2026, priced from RMB 274,400 (~$40,400) with BaaS or RMB 382,800-422,800 (~$56,300-$62,200) for full purchase with the battery included. The six/seven-seat versions run RMB 298,800-338,800 (~$41,200-$46,500) with BaaS, or RMB 406,800-446,800 (~$55,800-$61,200) outright. BaaS customers pay an additional monthly battery subscription of roughly $235. All versions remain China-only for now.
How It Compares
Against its own sibling, the NIO ES9, the ES8 offers identical 697 hp performance for roughly $20,000 less, at the cost of a smaller body and no seven-seat option. The ZEEKR 9X is the outright power king with its tri-motor 1,381 hp EREV setup, but that's a fundamentally different proposition — a range-extender chasing outright thrust rather than NIO's battery-swap convenience. The Leapmotor D19 undercuts the ES8's BaaS entry price and matches it on pure-EV range, but lacks NIO's swap network, in-house chip, and years of ADAS refinement. For buyers who value NIO's charging ecosystem and want German-rivaling cabin materials without German prices, the ES8 remains the segment's most complete package.
- 697 hp and a 3.97s sprint for a starting BaaS price of $40,400
- Genuine Nappa leather, 27-speaker Dolby Atmos audio and a 38-inch AR-HUD at a fraction of BMW X7/Mercedes GLS money
- Unmatched 3-5 minute battery swap network across 2,500+ China stations
- New 5-seat version adds a 1,334L boot and NIO's first in-house AI chip
- China-only for now, with no confirmed European or North American launch date
- BaaS pricing requires an ongoing monthly battery subscription (~$235) on top of the purchase price
The NIO ES8 earned its status as NIO's best-selling car ever by nailing the fundamentals: 697 hp, genuine luxury materials, and a battery-swap network no rival can replicate, all at a price that undercuts the German full-size SUV establishment by tens of thousands of dollars. The new five-seat version sharpens that pitch further — more cargo space, a lower BaaS entry price, and NIO's first taste of running its own AI silicon in a production car. If you can live with China-only availability, this is about as much technology and comfort as $40,000 buys anywhere on the planet right now.
