The BMW 530e and 550e xDrive are the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the eighth-generation 5 Series (internal code G60), sold as a four-door sedan and as a Touring estate. BMW Germany's price list for November 2026 shows three plug-in versions: the rear-drive 530e, the all-wheel-drive 530e xDrive and the six-cylinder 550e xDrive. All of them pair a petrol engine with an electric motor built into the eight-speed Steptronic gearbox, and all can be plugged in, which separates them from the 48-volt mild hybrids (MHEV) in the same range.
In Germany the 530e sedan starts at EUR 66,700 and the 550e xDrive sedan costs EUR 78,700, including 19% VAT and before options. The Touring body adds EUR 2,000 to each version. BMW quotes an electric range of up to 103 km on the WLTP cycle for the 530e sedan, and the 550e xDrive makes 489 PS (about 483 hp) in total. In Israel the importer Delek Motors lists the 530e sedan; in the United States BMW sells the 550e xDrive sedan as a 2027 model.
Performance & Specs
The 530e uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine rated at 140 kW (190 PS, about 187 hp) and an electric motor rated at 135 kW (184 PS, about 181 hp). BMW gives the combined system output as 220 kW (299 PS, about 295 hp) and 450 Nm of torque, and notes that the output depends on the battery's state of charge. The sedan reaches 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds with a 230 km/h top speed (225 km/h for the all-wheel-drive 530e xDrive). On electric power alone the limit is 140 km/h. BMW prints its power figures in PS in the German sheets, so every hp value in this article is converted from the kW or PS number (1 PS equals 0.9863 hp).
The 550e xDrive swaps in a 3.0-litre straight-six rated at 230 kW (313 PS, about 309 hp) and a stronger 145 kW (197 PS, about 194 hp) motor. System output is 360 kW (489 PS, about 483 hp) with 700 Nm, and the sedan sprints to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds with a top speed of 250 km/h. BMW USA quotes the same 483 hp and 516 lb-ft, with 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds as a preliminary BMW figure. The Touring is slightly slower because of its weight: 6.4 seconds for the 530e and 530e xDrive and 4.4 seconds for the 550e xDrive, with top speeds of 220, 218 and 250 km/h.

The plug-in sedan is 5,060 mm long, 1,900 mm wide (2,156 mm including mirrors) and 1,515 mm tall on a 2,995 mm wheelbase, and BMW's drawing gives the Touring the same length, width and wheelbase. Because the battery sits under the floor, the sedan keeps a 520-litre boot, which is 30 litres more than the electric i5 offers. The Touring holds 570 litres with the seats up and 1,700 litres with them folded.
Kerb weight under the EU rule, which includes a 75 kg driver, is 2,080 kg for the 530e sedan, 2,130 kg for the 530e xDrive and 2,230 kg for the 550e xDrive. The Touring weighs 2,140, 2,195 and 2,285 kg. Braked trailer loads are 1,800 kg for the rear-drive 530e and 2,000 kg for both xDrive versions, with 750 kg unbraked.

Charging & Battery
The 530e and 530e xDrive carry a 19.4 kWh (net) lithium-ion battery, and the 550e xDrive a 19.0 kWh (net) pack. BMW's current sheets list AC charging only, at up to 11 kW, which fills the pack from empty in 2 hours 15 minutes. BMW's data does not list a DC fast-charging rate for these cars, so the plug-in 5 Series is a car for home or workplace charging rather than motorway stops. BMW USA quotes a 22.1 kWh capacity for the 550e xDrive and says a Level 2 charger needs about 3 to 4 hours for a full charge; BMW's German data sheet lists the same 22.1 kWh as the gross capacity and 19.0 kWh as the net capacity of the 550e xDrive, so BMW USA's figure appears to be the gross one.
Electric range depends on the version. On the WLTP cycle the 530e sedan manages 94 to 103 km, the 530e xDrive 85 to 94 km and the 550e xDrive 84 to 90 km, with the top of each range reached on the most efficient wheel and equipment combination. The Touring is a few kilometres shorter at 88 to 98 km, 84 to 92 km and 82 to 91 km. BMW USA quotes up to 33 miles of electric range and up to 420 miles in total for the American 550e xDrive. WLTP weighted fuel use for the 530e sedan is 2.6 to 2.1 litres per 100 km, with CO2 of 58 to 48 g/km, and the electric consumption figure of 21.6 to 19.4 kWh/100 km is measured at the wall, so it includes charging losses.

Design & Interior
The G60 5 Series is a conventional three-box sedan with a long bonnet and a tall twin-kidney grille with a bright surround. The plug-in versions look almost identical to the petrol cars, and the main visible clue in BMW's press photos is the charge flap on the front wing. BMW's data sheet gives the 530e sedan a drag coefficient of 0.24, and the data sheet lists 245/45 R19 tyres on 8.5J rims for the 530e sedan. The Touring has the same front end with a longer roof and a squared-off tailgate.
Inside, BMW's Curved Display combines a 12.3-inch driver display with a 14.9-inch central touchscreen under one glass panel, and the price list shows it, with BMW Operating System 8.5 and navigation, on every 5 Series. Press photos show a light interior with an illuminated Interaction Bar across the dashboard and a crystal-look gear selector. The underfloor battery leaves the sedan with a 520-litre boot, and every plug-in version also carries a 60-litre fuel tank.
Technology & Features
The plug-in 5 Series runs BMW's iDrive software on the Curved Display, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available through the standard Connected Package Professional, according to the price list. Suspension is a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle, both in aluminium, and electronically controlled dampers and Integral Active Steering are optional. The brakes are vented discs, with four-piston fixed calipers at the front and single-piston floating calipers at the rear.
BMW offers an M Sportpaket for the 5 Series, and the Israeli 530e comes in M Sport and M Expressive trims. Standard stability systems include DSC with ABS, cornering brake control, a dry-braking function, fading compensation and trailer stability control. BMW also lists a hybrid-specific Auto Start Stop function and adaptive brake energy regeneration with a recuperation display.
Safety & ADAS
BMW's technical data lists dual front airbags, side airbags for driver and front passenger, an interaction airbag between the front seats, head airbags front and rear, three-point belts on all seats, belt tensioners and force limiters at the front and tensioners on the outer rear seats, crash sensors and tyre-pressure display as standard. Driver-assistance packages and their SAE automation levels differ by market and trim, and BMW's data sheets do not state a level, so none is claimed here. In the United States, BMW offers a Driving Assistant Professional package that adds hands-free driving up to 85 mph on controlled-access highways with active lane change.

Pricing & Availability
BMW Germany's price lists for the 5 Series, issued on 30 September 2026 and valid from November 2026, put the plug-in sedans at EUR 66,700 (530e), EUR 69,300 (530e xDrive) and EUR 78,700 (550e xDrive), including VAT and before options, excluding delivery. The corresponding Touring prices are EUR 68,700, EUR 71,300 and EUR 80,700. In Israel the importer Delek Motors sells the 530e sedan; Israeli price sites list it at roughly NIS 504,000 to 509,000 in M Sport trim and NIS 555,000 in M Expressive trim in 2026, but we could not confirm a current Delek Motors price list. A 550e xDrive is not listed there, and the 545e xDrive that Delek Motors sold in earlier years is a different, previous-generation car.
In the United States BMW lists the 2027 550e xDrive Sedan from USD 75,500 before the destination charge, and BMW Blog lists the 550e at USD 76,950, which equals that price plus a USD 1,450 destination charge. BMW USA's plug-in hybrid page lists no 530e. BMW USA quotes 483 hp, 516 lb-ft, 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds and up to 33 miles of electric range for it.
How It Compares
The Audi A5 e-hybrid is the closest plug-in rival we cover. Its 220 kW version matches the 530e's roughly 295 hp and costs EUR 65,100 for the Sedan against EUR 66,700 for the BMW, but Audi quotes up to 121 km of WLTP electric range against BMW's 103 km, and its 270 kW version reaches 362 hp. The BMW is the larger car, with a 520-litre boot and a 2,995 mm wheelbase, and it is the only one of the two with a six-cylinder option. The M5 shows how far the family stretches: its 717 hp V8 plug-in system and up to 68 km of electric range cost EUR 145,200, which is EUR 66,500 more than the 550e xDrive for roughly 234 hp extra and 22 km less electric range than the 550e's top WLTP figure. All prices are German list prices including VAT, and the rival figures are the best values quoted for each model.
- Up to 103 km of WLTP electric range in the 530e, enough for most daily commutes without using petrol
- Choice of 295 hp four-cylinder or 483 hp six-cylinder, sedan or Touring, from EUR 66,700 in Germany
- 520-litre sedan boot (570-1,700 L in the Touring) with no loss to the battery, and 1,800-2,000 kg towing
- AC charging only, with no DC fast charging listed, and a 19.0-19.4 kWh net battery smaller than the 20.7 kWh net (25.9 kWh gross) pack of the Audi A5 e-hybrid
- The 550e xDrive costs EUR 12,000 more than the 530e for 188 hp extra and a shorter 84-90 km electric range
The BMW 530e is the sensible plug-in 5 Series: about 100 km of electric range, a full-size boot and a price close to the Audi A5 e-hybrid, with the Touring body for families. The 550e xDrive is the one for buyers who want six-cylinder power and 483 hp without paying for an M5, and it still manages 84 to 90 km on electricity. Both depend on a home or work charger to make sense, since BMW lists no DC charging. Choose the 530e if mileage is modest and cost matters, and the 550e xDrive if performance is the reason to buy a 5 Series.
