BMW has revealed the all-new fifth-generation X5 (codename G65), and the headline is electric: for the first time ever, the X5 is offered as a fully-electric iX5. Unveiled on 30 June 2026 at BMW's Spartanburg plant, the new X5 is the first single BMW model sold with five powertrain types — petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, fully electric and, later, hydrogen. The star is the iX5 60 xDrive: a dual-motor electric SUV with a 141 kWh battery, up to 845 km (525 miles) of WLTP range, 800V architecture and 460 kW DC fast charging. Alongside it sit two plug-in hybrids — the 490 hp X5 50e and the 612 hp M60e — plus mild-hybrid petrol and diesel models. It rides on an updated version of BMW's CLAR platform but adopts Neue Klasse design and the new Panoramic iDrive cabin.
Performance & Specs
The electrified range leads the story. The iX5 60 xDrive uses dual motors for all-wheel drive, 425 kW (570 hp) and 805 Nm, hitting 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and topping out at 210 km/h. Its 141 kWh battery uses BMW's Gen6 cylindrical cells for up to 845 km WLTP. The X5 50e plug-in hybrid pairs a 3.0-litre turbo straight-six with an electric motor for around 490 hp (360 kW) and 700 Nm, with up to 102 km of electric range; the Europe-only M60e M Performance PHEV pushes that to 612 hp (450 kW) and 800 Nm for a ~4.5-second 0–100 km/h. Rounding out the range are 48V mild-hybrid petrol (X5 40, ~394 hp) and diesel (X5 40d, ~308 hp) six-cylinders.

Dimensions & Practicality

The new X5 grows to 4,994 mm long (about 59 mm more than before) on a longer ~3,035 mm wheelbase, while sitting slightly lower and marginally narrower for a sleeker stance. Boot space runs from 650 litres (525 litres in the PHEV, which packages its battery under the floor) up to 1,850 litres with the seats folded. The big packaging change is that the X5 is now strictly a five-seater — BMW has dropped the optional third row, steering seven-seat buyers to the larger X7. It's a mid-to-large luxury SUV that trades a sliver of ultimate practicality for a more cohesive, modern design.

Charging & Battery
The iX5 60 is the technical star. Its 141 kWh pack uses BMW's sixth-generation cylindrical cells (around 20% more energy-dense) on an 800-volt architecture, enabling 460 kW DC fast charging — a 10–80% top-up in roughly 22 minutes, or about 274 km of range added in 10 minutes. AC charging runs at up to 22 kW, and the iX5 supports bidirectional (vehicle-to-load/grid) charging. The X5 50e and M60e plug-in hybrids share a 26.5 kWh battery for up to 102 km of electric running, ideal for silent, emission-free commutes with a petrol six-cylinder for longer trips. At roughly 2.9 tonnes, the iX5 is the heaviest series-production BMW yet, but it can still tow up to 2,700 kg.

Design & Interior
The G65 X5 adopts BMW's latest Neue Klasse design language. Up front there's a narrower kidney grille flanked by a bold new "double-X" LED light signature — four X-motifs that form the headlights and daytime running lights (and can be switched to plain diagonal lines in some markets). The rear gets full-width tail lights and, after four generations, a single-piece tailgate in place of the classic split unit, and there are optional flush electronic door handles. Inside, it's a huge leap: BMW Panoramic iDrive on the new Operating System X, with a full-width Panoramic Vision display projected across the base of the windscreen, a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, a head-up display and an optional 14.6-inch passenger screen. The traditional iDrive rotary controller is gone, replaced by touch and voice, with crystal switchgear and an available Bowers & Wilkins Dolby Atmos sound system.
Safety & ADAS
The new X5 launches with BMW's latest Driving Assistant Plus (L2+) suite, including a hands-free Highway Assistant, automated "Entry-2-Exit" and "Address-2-Address" driving features, and AI-based parking assistance. Backed by the more powerful Operating System X and BMW's "Heart of Joy" central control unit, the assistance and dynamics systems are more integrated than before, promising smoother, more natural responses across all five powertrains.

Pricing & Availability
The new X5 was revealed on 30 June 2026 and goes on sale in stages: the petrol and diesel models arrive first (late November 2026), with the plug-in hybrids and electric iX5 following in early 2027. In the US, the X5 40 starts around $70,000, the 50e plug-in hybrid about $78,000 and the electric iX5 60 about $80,000. In Germany, the 50e and iX5 60 are priced at €102,800, with the M60e flagship at €125,000. It's a global model, though the US misses out on the diesel and the M60e.
How It Compares
Among electric luxury SUVs, the iX5 60's trump card is range and charging: its 845 km WLTP figure and 460 kW peak charging beat the Porsche Cayenne Electric, Mercedes EQE SUV and Audi Q6 e-tron. The Porsche is far more powerful in Turbo form (up to 1,140 hp) and the Mercedes and Audi are strong all-rounders, but none match the BMW's blend of range, charging speed and — uniquely — the option of the very same car as a plug-in hybrid, petrol, diesel or (later) hydrogen. That powertrain breadth is the new X5's real party trick.
- First electric iX5 with class-leading 845 km range and 460 kW charging
- Five powertrains — there's an X5 for everyone
- 490–612 hp plug-in hybrids with up to ~102 km EV range
- Big tech leap: Panoramic iDrive, 17.9-inch screen, Operating System X
- Rides on updated CLAR, not the ground-up Neue Klasse platform
- Divisive "double-X" front-end design
- Seven-seat option dropped — now five-seat only
- iX5 is very heavy (~2.9 t); US skips the diesel and M60e
The fifth-generation BMW X5 is a genuinely important car, and not just because it finally goes fully electric. By offering five powertrains — petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, electric and hydrogen — in one model, BMW lets buyers choose their path to electrification without changing cars. The star is the iX5 60 xDrive: 570 hp, up to 845 km of WLTP range and 460 kW / 800V charging make it one of the longest-range, fastest-charging electric SUVs on sale, while the 490 hp 50e and 612 hp M60e cover the plug-in hybrid ground superbly. It isn't flawless — it uses an updated CLAR platform rather than the new Neue Klasse architecture, the double-X face won't be for everyone, and the seven-seat option is gone — but as a do-anything luxury SUV that meets buyers wherever they are on the EV curve, the new X5 is formidable.
