The BMW i5 is the all-electric version of the eighth-generation 5 Series (internal code G60), sold as a four-door sedan and as a Touring estate. It shares its 2,995 mm wheelbase and overall shape with the combustion-engined 5 Series. Three sedan versions are offered: the rear-drive eDrive40, the dual-motor xDrive40 and the M60 xDrive, with the Touring body available alongside each. All three use the same 81.2 kWh net battery and the same 205 kW DC charging limit, so the choice comes down to power, drive layout and price.
Since March 2025 the i5 has used silicon carbide semiconductors in its power electronics, and BMW says that, together with low-rolling-resistance tyres on aerodynamic wheels, lifted the WLTP range by up to 47 km depending on model and equipment. In Germany the sedan starts at EUR 70,900 for the eDrive40, according to BMW Germany's price list (Ausgabe 1, 30 September 2026, headed November 2026), and tops out at EUR 100,200 for the M60 xDrive. BMW Israel's importer, Delek Motors, sells the i5 as well, with eDrive40 trims listed on auto.co.il at roughly NIS 589,000 to NIS 629,900.
Performance & Specs
The base i5 eDrive40 has a single motor on the rear axle. BMW rates it at 230 kW (313 PS, about 309 hp) in normal driving and 250 kW (340 PS, about 335 hp) in My Mode Sport, with 400 Nm of torque, or 430 Nm when the Sport Boost function is active. It reaches 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds as a sedan (6.1 seconds as a Touring) and is limited to 193 km/h. BMW quotes PS in its German sheets, so every hp figure in this article is converted from the kW or PS value (1 PS equals 0.9863 hp).
The i5 xDrive40 adds a 190 kW (258 PS) front motor to the 230 kW rear unit. System output is 260 kW (354 PS, about 349 hp), rising to 290 kW (394 PS, about 389 hp) in My Mode Sport, with 590 Nm. The sprint takes 5.4 seconds (5.5 seconds for the Touring) and the top speed is 215 km/h. The M60 xDrive pairs a 192 kW (261 PS) front motor with a 250 kW (340 PS) rear motor, for 380 kW (517 PS, about 510 hp) standard and 442 kW (601 PS, about 593 hp) in My Mode Sport, with 795 Nm and 820 Nm when M Sport Boost or Launch Control is active. BMW lists 3.8 seconds to 100 km/h for the sedan (3.9 seconds for the Touring) and a 230 km/h limiter. The 593 hp figure is the peak Sport-mode output, not the everyday rating.

Charging & Battery
All i5 versions share a 400-volt, 81.2 kWh (net) lithium-ion battery under the floor, so the car does not use an 800-volt architecture. DC charging peaks at 205 kW, and BMW's sheet says 10-80% takes 30 minutes at a 205 kW station. At that maximum rate the sedan adds between 145 and 211 km of range in 10 minutes, depending on the version and equipment. BMW does not publish a gross capacity in these data sheets, so only the net figure is used here.
On AC, 11 kW is standard and a three-phase 22 kW charger is optional, which cuts a full charge from 8 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 15 minutes. BMW's sheet lists the 22 kW charger without the optional label on the M60 xDrive, which lists only the 22 kW time. WLTP combined consumption on the sedan is 17.9 kWh/100 km for the eDrive40, 18.8 for the xDrive40 and 19.5-19.4 for the M60 xDrive in the standard configuration, falling to as little as 14.7, 15.8 and 17.1 kWh/100 km with the most efficient equipment. WLTP figures are measured at the wall and include charging losses.
| BATTERY | 81.2 kWh net, 400 V |
|---|---|
| AC CHARGING | 11 kW standard; 22 kW optional (three-phase) |
| DC FAST CHARGING | 205 kW maximum |
| DC 10-80% TIME | 30 min at a 205 kW station |
Design & Interior
The G60 5 Series is a conventional three-box sedan with a long bonnet and a tall twin-kidney grille, and the i5 differs from its combustion siblings mainly in its closed detailing and aerodynamic wheels. Its drag coefficient is 0.23 for the eDrive40 and xDrive40 sedan, with the M60 xDrive at 0.25. The M60 uses staggered 245/45 R19 front and 275/40 R19 rear tyres, while the eDrive40 and xDrive40 run 245/45 R19 all round. The Touring keeps the same lines with a longer roof and a 570-litre boot.
Inside, BMW's Curved Display combines a 12.3-inch driver screen with a 14.9-inch central touchscreen. Since March 2025 every 5 Series model has ambient lighting with a crystalline Interaction Bar, lumbar support on both front seats and the Harman Kardon HiFi system as standard equipment. Because the battery sits under the floor, the sedan keeps its full 490-litre boot and has no front trunk.
Technology & Features
The i5 runs BMW's iDrive software on the Curved Display, and BMW lists the Harman Kardon sound system as standard across the range. Suspension is a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle in aluminium, with air springs and automatic levelling at the rear on every model. Electronically controlled dampers are optional on the eDrive40 and standard on the xDrive40 and M60 xDrive, and Integral Active Steering is standard on the xDrive40 and M60 xDrive.
The M60 xDrive adds the M Sport Boost and Launch Control functions that lift system output from 380 kW to 442 kW. BMW's technical sheet lists four-piston fixed-caliper front brakes with single-piston floating calipers at the rear. This article uses BMW's published figures only; ADAS packages vary by market and are not itemised here.
Safety & ADAS
BMW's technical data lists dual front airbags, side airbags for driver and front passenger, an interaction airbag between the front seats, head airbags front and rear, three-point belts on all seats, belt tensioners and force limiters at the front and tensioners on the outer rear seats, crash sensors and tyre-pressure display as standard. Stability systems include DSC with ABS, cornering brake control, a dry-brake function, fade compensation, hill start control and trailer stability control. Driver-assistance packages and their SAE automation levels differ by market and trim, and BMW's data sheets do not state a level, so none is claimed here.
| ADAS LEVEL | Not stated by BMW in the technical data (varies by market and option pack) |

The Touring body is offered on the same three powertrains. BMW Germany's Touring price list (Ausgabe 1, 30 September 2026, headed November 2026) puts the eDrive40 Touring at EUR 72,900, the xDrive40 Touring at EUR 78,300 and the M60 xDrive Touring at EUR 102,200, including VAT and before options. It lists the eDrive40 Touring at 6.1 seconds to 100 km/h and 495-602 km WLTP, the xDrive40 Touring at 5.5 seconds and 468-561 km, and the M60 xDrive Touring at 3.9 seconds and 455-522 km, all with the same 81.2 kWh battery.
Pricing & Availability
In Germany BMW's price list (Ausgabe 1, 30 September 2026, headed November 2026) puts the i5 sedan at EUR 70,900 (eDrive40), EUR 76,300 (xDrive40) and EUR 100,200 (M60 xDrive), including VAT and before options. In Israel the importer is Delek Motors, but its own price list could not be opened, so these are the 2026 listings on auto.co.il and iCar, which show the eDrive40 in Elegant and M Expressive trims at about NIS 589,000 to NIS 589,900 (auto.co.il and iCar differ by NIS 900) and NIS 629,900, with the M60 xDrive M-Ultimate listed at NIS 869,900 by auto.co.il and iCar. In the United States BMW sells the i5 through its normal dealer network; BMWBlog reported on 14 October 2026 that the US model-year 2027 i5 costs USD 67,100 (eDrive40), USD 70,100 (xDrive40) and USD 84,100 (M60 xDrive, about 590 hp), all unchanged from model-year 2026, and that a native NACS charge port has been standard since March 2026 builds; this is a single independent report and has not been checked against BMW USA. BMW also builds a separate long-wheelbase i5 for China, which is a different car from the one described here.
How It Compares
Against the Audi A6 e-tron, the i5 asks EUR 8,100 more at the base level (EUR 70,900 against EUR 62,800 for the base 75.8 kWh A6 e-tron). Audi's longest-range version, the A6 Sportback e-tron Performance, is quoted at up to 777 km WLTP and costs EUR 75,600, which is EUR 4,700 more than the i5 eDrive40 and its 627 km, and Audi highlights 800-volt charging. The i5's counter-argument is its top model: the M60 xDrive's 593 hp in Sport mode is more than the 543 hp (Launch Control peak) Audi quotes for the S6 e-tron, which lists at EUR 99,500 against EUR 100,200 for the M60 xDrive. The Volvo ES90 is priced almost level with the i5 eDrive40 (EUR 71,490 against EUR 70,900) and claims up to about 700 km WLTP depending on market (Twin Motor; the Single Motor at that price is rated up to 664 km) and up to 671 hp (Twin Motor Performance), which makes the Swedish car the stronger spec-sheet buy and leaves BMW's case resting on the 5 Series chassis and the choice of a Touring body. All prices are German list prices including VAT; ranges and power are the best figures each maker quotes for the model line, and the Audi figures above are tied to the variant that carries them.
- Sedan and Touring bodies with three powertrains, from 335 hp to a 593 hp M60 xDrive
- Up to 627 km WLTP on the eDrive40, up to 47 km more since the March 2025 efficiency update
- 205 kW DC charging, 10-80% in 30 minutes, and a 490 L boot (570-1,700 L in the Touring)
- 400-volt, 81.2 kWh net pack gives less range and slower charging than newer 800-volt rivals such as the Audi A6 e-tron
- M60 xDrive costs EUR 100,200 in Germany, nearly EUR 30,000 more than the eDrive40, and its range drops to 473-539 km WLTP
The BMW i5 is the sensible electric 5 Series: a well-sized executive sedan or estate with a usable range and quick enough charging, rather than a technology leader. The eDrive40 at EUR 70,900 is the sweet spot, with the longest range and rear-wheel drive, while the xDrive40 suits snowy markets and the M60 xDrive is for buyers who want 593 hp in a business sedan. Its 400-volt architecture and 81.2 kWh pack now trail the 800-volt rivals, so shop it against the Audi A6 e-tron and Volvo ES90 before buying, and choose the Touring if cargo space matters.
