The MG S5 EV is MG's compact electric SUV and is positioned as the successor to the ZS EV. It uses the Modular Scalable Platform first seen on the MG4, drives the rear wheels and comes with a choice of two batteries: a 49 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack with a 125 kW (170 PS, 168 hp) motor, and a 64 kWh nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) pack with a 170 kW (231 PS, 228 hp) motor. MG UK quotes up to 298 miles (480 km) of WLTP range and DC charging at up to 139 kW. The car was announced in the UK on 25 March 2025, went on sale there in April 2025 and reached Germany in May 2025, and the Israeli importer Lubinsky Group launched it in December 2025. In the UK the range starts at £28,995 including VAT for the 340 km SE Standard Range; the 480 km figure belongs to the 64 kWh SE Long Range at £31,495. The German list price starts at €37,990.
Performance & Specs
Every S5 EV is rear-wheel drive, with a single synchronous electric motor on the rear axle and a fixed-ratio transmission. The entry SE Standard Range makes 125 kW (170 PS, about 168 hp) and 250 Nm (184 lb ft) and covers 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 8.0 seconds. The two Long Range versions, the SE Long Range and the Trophy Long Range, use a stronger motor with 170 kW (231 PS, about 228 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb ft), which MG says reaches 0-62 mph in 6.3 seconds; MG adds that full torque is available in under 50 milliseconds. A note on units: MG UK's brochure quotes PS, the metric horsepower, which is about 1.4 percent smaller than the imperial hp, so 231 PS works out at about 228 hp (170 kW x 1.341). The Israeli importer lists 170 hp for its car, which sits in the same class as the entry 125 kW motor (170 PS) rather than the 231 PS unit.
MG has paid attention to the way the S5 EV drives. Weight distribution is 47:53 front to rear, the rear suspension is a five-link design, and there are five drive modes: Normal, Sport, Comfort, Snow and Custom. The standard Kinetic Energy Recovery System has four recuperation levels (Low, Medium, Strong and Adaptive) plus a One Pedal mode. The brakes use Continental's integrated braking booster for EVs with 321 mm front and 300 mm rear discs, and MG quotes a 62-0 mph stopping distance of 35.5 metres. New bearings are said to cut rolling resistance by a further 25 percent compared with earlier MG models.

Charging & Battery
The S5 EV uses a 400-volt system. The 49 kWh LFP battery has 47.1 kWh usable, accepts up to 120 kW DC and charges from 10 to 80 percent in 24 minutes, while the 64 kWh NCM battery has 62.1 kWh usable, accepts up to 139 kW and takes 28 minutes for the same window. Both times apply to a 150 kW ultra-rapid charger under standardised test conditions, and MG warns that real-world times vary with battery age, temperature, state of charge and charger. On a 50 kW public charger MG lists 2 hours for the small battery and 1 hour 46 minutes for the large one.
At home the UK and European specification has a 7 kW on-board AC charger, which MG says needs about 8.5 hours for 10-100% on the small battery and 11.5 hours on the large one, and 35 hours on a domestic three-pin socket for the Long Range. The Israeli importer quotes different figures for its car, up to 150 kW DC (we could not confirm its AC figure), together with a battery of about 62 kWh, so those numbers should not be read across to UK or German cars. Official WLTP efficiency in MG's brochure is 16.6, 15.5 and 16.0 kWh/100 km for the three versions; these are measured at the socket and include charging losses, which is why they sit above what the usable battery size divided by range would suggest.

Design & Interior
MG says the S5 EV takes cues from the Cyberster roadster. At the front there is a split grille, integrated high and low beam lights and daytime running lights with a chequered-flag signature that is repeated at the rear, where a light bar spans the tailgate under a small spoiler. Silver side cladding and twin roof rails run the length of the body, and the Trophy wears 18-inch wheels against 17-inch wheels on the SE. There are six colours: Black Pearl, Cosmic Silver, Arctic White, Dynamic Red, Camden Grey and Piccadilly Blue.
Inside, a central 12.8-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital driver display form the dashboard, with physical buttons for audio, climate, hazard lights and demisting, a feature MG says many customers asked for. The cabin uses soft-touch plastics, a suede-style wireless phone charger and MG's six-sided steering wheel. The Trophy gets dual-tone grey leather-style seats, heated front seats and steering wheel, lumbar support, rear privacy glass and a 360-degree camera, and its infotainment includes built-in apps such as YouTube and Spotify.
Technology & Features
The S5 EV runs MG's iSMART system, which lets owners lock and unlock the car, find it, pre-start the climate control, plan trips and check range, charge state and tyre pressures from a phone. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. MG Pilot bundles the driver assistance systems, and the S5 EV introduces MG Pilot Custom, which lets the driver choose and store which assistance features are active, switchable from the menu with a swipe and three taps. The driver display can show navigation or lane-assist information as the driver prefers.
Safety & ADAS
All versions have seven airbags (front, side, curtain and a central airbag) in a reinforced steel body structure. The standard MG Pilot suite includes adaptive cruise control, active emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keep assist with lane departure warning and emergency lane keeping, intelligent speed limit assist with traffic sign recognition, forward and rear collision warning, blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert. The 360-degree camera is limited to the Trophy. Euro NCAP awarded the S5 EV five stars in 2025, with 90 percent for adult occupant protection.

Pricing & Availability
In the UK the MG S5 EV starts at £28,995 on the road including VAT, which is the "from" price on MG UK's own model page in October 2026. The car is not on the government's Electric Car Grant list, but MG runs its own £1,500 MG EV Car Grant for private buyers on cars registered by 31 December 2026, which appears in its PCP offers; the £28,995 above is the list price. The SE Long Range is listed at £31,495 and the Trophy Long Range at £33,995 according to Electrifying.com (updated 3 July 2026), and Parkers lists the UK range as £28,995-£33,995. MG announced the car in March 2025 at £28,495, £30,995 and £33,495, so the current list is £500 higher on each version. All UK cars carry MG's seven-year or 80,000-mile warranty. In Germany the launch list prices from May 2025 were €37,990 for the Comfort Standard Range, €42,990 for the Comfort Long Range and €44,990 for the Luxury Long Range, all including VAT, with a seven-year or 150,000 km warranty; the entry price was still €37,990 in July 2026, when MG ran a €6,000 bonus on its electric models until 30 September 2026 (now expired), according to elektroquatsch.de; we have not re-checked the two higher German prices since launch.
In Israel the importer Lubinsky Group launched the car as the MG S5 on 23 December 2025 in a single Luxury trim at NIS 148,888; on 22 July 2026 the importer cut the price by about NIS 10,000 to NIS 139,000 as a permanent list change, according to auto.co.il. The Israeli listings give 170 hp, 25.5 kgm (about 250 Nm), 0-100 km/h in 8.2 seconds, 425 km WLTP, a battery of about 62 kWh and a seven-year warranty, with the battery covered for eight years or 150,000 km. That specification does not match any UK version, so it should be treated as its own configuration. MG also sells the model in Australia and several Asian markets, but we did not check prices there. In China the car is the MG ES5, and the official UK and German spelling is MGS5 EV.
How It Compares
The two closest rivals sit in MG's own range. The MG4 EV is the hatchback built on the same platform and now starts at £30,495 on MG UK's site, £1,500 above the S5 EV (MG UK also sells the smaller MG4 EV Urban from £23,495), with up to 544 km of WLTP range and power from 188 hp to 429 hp, while the larger MG S6 EV starts at £37,995 with up to 529 km and 241 hp in its base form. The S5 EV therefore sits between the MG4 and the S6 on price, and its 453-litre boot is the practical argument over the hatchback. Outside the brand, the Skoda Elroq 60 is a useful price reference for the entry version in Germany: it lists at €37,390 against the S5 EV's €37,990 list price for the Standard Range, but offers up to 453 km of WLTP range against 340 km. The two prices date from different times (the S5 EV's from its May 2025 launch, still current in July 2026), and the Elroq is a different, larger car, so it is a guide to value rather than a like-for-like test. In the UK, the Long Range versions are the better balance of 480 km and 6.3 seconds at £31,495.
- Rear-wheel drive with a choice of 125 kW (168 hp) or 170 kW (228 hp) motors and up to 480 km (298 miles) WLTP from the 64 kWh battery
- 139 kW peak DC charging and 10-80% in 28 minutes under standard conditions, from £28,995 in the UK
- 453 L boot (1,441 L folded), a five-star Euro NCAP result and a seven-year warranty
- The entry SE Standard Range manages only 340 km (211 miles) WLTP and 120 kW DC, and the Long Range versions need about 11.5 hours on a 7 kW home charger
- Towing is limited to 750 kg and there is no front boot, so practicality is mainly the 453 L rear load space
The MG S5 EV is a sensible compact electric SUV: rear-wheel drive, up to 480 km WLTP on the 64 kWh battery, 139 kW charging and a 453-litre boot from £28,995 in the UK. The Long Range versions are the ones to buy, because the 170 kW motor and the extra 140 km of range cost only £2,500 more than the entry car, which manages just 340 km. Buyers should treat the charging times as best-case figures and note that the 7 kW home charger is slow. It is a convincing, good-value family EV rather than a standout in any single area.
