The NIO ET5 is the brand's mid-size electric sedan, a four-door with a sloping coupe-style roofline, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain and a battery that can be swapped at NIO's own stations. It was launched in Europe in autumn 2022, and European deliveries began on 31 March 2023. The wagon version, the ET5 Touring (ET5T), has its own article on this site; this one covers the sedan, a pure battery-electric (BEV) car with no combustion engine and no plug-in hybrid variant.
What makes the ET5 interesting in autumn 2026 is the price. NIO Denmark now lists the ET5 from DKK 349,900 for the Standard Range and DKK 389,900 for the Long Range, and Nordiskbil reported in spring 2026 that these figures replaced DKK 449,900 and DKK 549,900, cuts of DKK 100,000 and DKK 160,000. Both versions have 360 kW (489 PS, about 482 hp) of system power, 700 Nm of torque and a 0-100 km/h time of 4.0 seconds in the Sport+ mode; WLTP range is up to 456 km with the 75 kWh pack and up to 590 km with the 100 kWh pack.
A note on which car this is. The ET5 on sale in Europe, as shown on NIO's German, Danish, Dutch and Swedish websites in October 2026, has a 12.8-inch AMOLED centre screen. The version NIO launched in China on 2 April 2026 is a different specification, with a 15.6-inch display, a CLTC range of 740 km on the 100 kWh pack and a price of CNY 298,000 to 310,000, and it has not been confirmed for Europe. Everything below refers to the European car unless stated otherwise.
Performance & Specs
Every ET5 sold in Europe is an all-wheel-drive car with two motors. The front axle carries a 150 kW (about 201 hp) asynchronous induction motor and the rear axle a 210 kW (about 282 hp) permanent-magnet synchronous motor with a silicon-carbide power module, which together give 360 kW and 700 Nm. NIO quotes the output as 489 PS; PS is the metric horsepower, so the figure in imperial horsepower is about 482 hp, not 489. NIO says the two-motor layout also gives the system redundancy and continuously splits power between the axles for different driving situations.
NIO states 0-100 km/h in 4.0 seconds in Sport+ mode and 5.9 seconds in Sport mode, a top speed of 200 km/h and a 100-0 km/h braking distance of 33.8 metres on performance tyres. These are NIO engineering figures, and both battery sizes share the same motors, so the acceleration claim applies to the Standard Range and the Long Range alike. The drag coefficient is 0.24 and the weight distribution is 50:50 front to rear, with a centre of gravity NIO puts at 482.6 mm.
The chassis uses a five-link suspension at the front and a multi-link layout at the rear, with a front axle that has a virtual kingpin geometry and steering rack ahead of the axle centreline. Kerb weight is 2,115 kg for the Standard Range and 2,135 kg for the Long Range, and the maximum permitted weight is 2,690 kg. A pop-out tow bar is optional with a braked limit of 1,400 kg, and the roof can carry 50 kg.

The ET5 is a true mid-size car with a long wheelbase for its length. NIO's Dutch price list gives an interior length of 1,857 mm, front shoulder width of 1,542 mm and rear width of 1,498 mm, with 1,007 mm of front and 940 mm of rear headroom and 895 mm of rear legroom. A low roofline is the price of the coupe shape, though the headroom figures are reasonable for the class, and the 1.28 square metre panoramic glass roof lightens the cabin; NIO says it blocks 99.9% of UV rays.
Luggage space is 394 litres with the rear seats up and 1,135 litres with the 60:40 split rear bench folded, according to NIO's January 2026 Dutch price list, plus an under-floor storage compartment. The tailgate opens electrically with a foot sensor. The ET5 has five seats, and anyone who needs more load space is the target of the Touring wagon.

Charging & Battery
Charging speed is the ET5's weakest number on paper. NIO quotes a DC peak of 140 or 170 kW on the Standard Range and 125 or 180 kW on the Long Range, because each size is built in two battery versions, and a swap at a NIO station can return either one. The 10-80% time is 30 or 27 minutes for the Standard Range and 40 or 26 minutes for the Long Range, and NIO Denmark summarises it as about 26 to 27 minutes at the 170 to 180 kW peak. AC charging is 11 kW, which fills the battery from empty in 6 hours 45 minutes to 8 hours 15 minutes.
The alternative to plugging in is swapping. The ET5 supports NIO's battery swap, in which the car drives into a station and gets a charged pack in a few minutes, and NIO offers the car with the battery bought outright or rented under Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS). In the Netherlands the rental costs EUR 169 a month for the 75 kWh battery and EUR 289 a month for the 100 kWh battery, including VAT.
WLTP combined consumption is 18.9 to 20.8 kWh per 100 km for the Standard Range and 18.6 to 20.7 kWh per 100 km for the Long Range. The ranges are 456 to 413 km and 590 to 532 km; the lower figure in each pair depends on the wheel and option choice, while NIO Israel's own table gives 456 km and 540 km for the 75 kWh and 100 kWh cars.

Design & Interior
The ET5's design is easy to recognise: a shark-nose front end with a split daytime running light signature, a roofline that runs back to an integrated ducktail spoiler and a slim illumiBlade tail-light. The doors have frameless windows and flush, automatically presented handles, and they close softly. The Danish and Dutch sites list a limited colour range, with Sunbath Yellow as an extra-cost shade, and the car rides on 19-inch wheels as standard with 20-inch wheels available.
The interior is built around a 12.8-inch AMOLED centre screen and a low dashboard with hidden air vents. NOMI Halo, the voice assistant, sits on top of the dash, and a 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos system with 23 speakers and 1,000 W provides the sound. The front seats are electrically adjustable in 12 ways as standard and 14 ways with the Comfort Package, which also adds ventilation, massage and rear-seat heating according to NIO's Dutch price list. The standard seat covering is a Haptex leatherette, and the headliner and decor use recycled materials; NIO says each car uses the equivalent of 100 recycled PET bottles in the cabin.
Technology & Features
The software side is NIO's own: the digital cockpit and voice assistant, a PanoCinema display and ambient lighting that moves with the music. Because the system is updated over the air, feature availability varies by country, and NIO says in its footnotes that some functions arrive after delivery. The car also has dual-zone climate control, a 40 W wireless charger for the first row of seats, two 60 W USB-C ports and an air-quality system with a PM2.5 sensor.
Safety & ADAS
The ET5 earned five stars in Euro NCAP's 2023 tests, with 96% for adult occupants, 85% for children, 83% for vulnerable road users and 81% for safety assist. The body is a hybrid of high-strength steel and aluminium with a cast rear floor, and NIO quotes a torsional stiffness of 34,000 Nm per degree. NIO's assisted-driving suite is sold as NIO Assisted and Intelligent Driving, requires the driver's constant supervision and varies by country; NIO does not state an SAE level for it.
| ADAS LEVEL | Driver-supervised assistance (no SAE level stated by NIO) |
|---|---|
| ADAS FEATURES | Aquila Super Sensing with LiDAR, 11 cameras, 5 radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors; features vary by country; Euro NCAP five stars (2023) |

Pricing & Availability
Denmark is the market with the freshest official numbers. NIO Denmark lists the ET5 from DKK 349,900 (Standard Range, 456 km WLTP) and DKK 389,900 (Long Range, 590 km WLTP). Nordiskbil reported in spring 2026 that these were cuts from DKK 449,900 and DKK 549,900. At the exchange rate of 6 October 2026 (about DKK 6.63 to the US dollar) the two prices are about $52,800 and $58,800. NIO's Danish page does not say how the battery is financed, so the figures should be read as list prices, not as BaaS offers.
In the Netherlands, NIO's January 2026 price list shows a recommended price of EUR 62,700 for the Standard Range and EUR 71,700 for the Long Range, both with the battery included, or EUR 50,700 for either car without the battery plus the monthly BaaS fee. The prices include VAT, the BPM car tax and EUR 1,429 of delivery costs. NIO's German price list, the latest issue published on its website, is dated November 2023 and shows EUR 47,500 including VAT without the battery, with the battery priced at EUR 12,000 (75 kWh) or EUR 21,000 (100 kWh), so EUR 59,500 and EUR 68,500 with the battery bought. Current German prices may differ from that list.
In Israel, NIO is sold by the importer Delek Motors; cartube.co.il reported in November 2024 that the ET5 75 kWh was cut from NIS 344,000 to NIS 294,900. NIO Israel's own price list no. 02/2026, dated 1 April 2026 (nio.co.il/car-list), shows NIS 255,000 for the Standard Range 75 kWh, NIS 275,000 for the Standard Range Comfort Pack, NIS 310,000 for the Long Range 100 kWh and NIS 330,000 for the Long Range Comfort Pack, each plus a NIS 3,899 licence fee. The Israeli table gives 456 km for the 75 kWh car and 540 km for the 100 kWh car (the NIO Israel page also quotes a 583 km maximum without saying under what conditions). Israeli listings print the 489 PS output as 489 hp, which is about 482 hp.
How It Compares
All three rivals are electric sedans with all-wheel drive and a German list price, which makes the comparison direct. The BYD Seal Excellence has more power (523 hp) and costs EUR 53,990, but its WLTP range is 520 km, 70 km less than the ET5 Long Range. The BMW i4 xDrive40 (396 hp, 546 km, EUR 64,800) and the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N Line X (321 hp, 570 km, EUR 65,250) are both less powerful than the NIO and have shorter range figures. Among these four, the ET5 Long Range has the longest WLTP range and the second-highest power, and it is the most expensive on the German and Dutch price lists.
The comparison changes with the Danish prices. At DKK 389,900 the Long Range is about EUR 52,200 at the 6 October 2026 rate, which puts it below the German list prices of the BMW and the Hyundai, but the Danish price is a different market with different taxes, so it is a pointer rather than a like-for-like figure. Charging is where the newer cars have moved on: the Ioniq 6 is rated at up to 260 kW and the i4 at up to 205 kW, against the ET5's 125 to 180 kW.
- 360 kW (482 hp) dual-motor AWD with 700 Nm and a claimed 4.0 s 0-100 km/h, and up to 590 km WLTP from the 100 kWh pack
- Battery swapping and BaaS rental as alternatives to buying and plugging in, with 11 kW AC and 26 to 40 minute 10-80% DC times
- Denmark's list prices of DKK 349,900 and DKK 389,900 are 22% and 29% below the earlier DKK 449,900 and DKK 549,900
- DC peak of 125 to 180 kW depending on the battery version, and 40 minutes for 10-80% on the 125 kW Long Range pack
- Boot of 394 litres, and the European car does not have the 15.6-inch screen of the 2026 China-market ET5
The ET5 is a fast, well-equipped electric sedan whose power and range figures stand comparison with cars costing the same or more: 482 hp, 4.0 seconds to 100 km/h and up to 590 km WLTP. Its weak points are the modest DC charging speed and a boot that is small for the size of the car, and the swap network will matter only to owners close to a NIO station. The Danish price cuts to DKK 349,900 and DKK 389,900 make it a strong proposition there; at the EUR 62,700 and EUR 71,700 of the Dutch list it is a harder sell against the BYD Seal and the BMW i4. Recommended for buyers who value power and range and live near NIO's network, with a price check before ordering.
