The Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W214) has three petrol plug-in hybrids (PHEV) in its range: the E 300 e, the E 400 e 4MATIC and the Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+. All three combine a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a nine-speed automatic, and all come as a sedan (Mercedes calls it Saloon or Limousine) and as an Estate (T-Modell). The E 300 e has a system output of 230 kW (313 PS, about 309 hp) and a 25.4 kWh gross battery, the E 400 e 4MATIC raises that to 280 kW (381 PS, about 376 hp), and the AMG E 53 reaches 430 kW (585 PS, about 577 hp) with a larger 28.6 kWh battery. A note on naming: there is no “E 450 e”. The E 450 4MATIC is a mild hybrid (MHEV) with a 48-volt starter-generator that cannot be plugged in, and the E 200 and E 220 d are not plug-ins either (a diesel plug-in, the E 300 de, also exists in Germany but is not covered here). Mercedes quoted up to 115 km of electric range at launch for the E 300 e and E 400 e, while German certification data lists 87 to 106 km on the combined WLTP electric-range measure, which is the figure used here. In the United States only the AMG E 53 HYBRID is sold as a plug-in, from $91,100 for the sedan in the 2027 model year.
Performance & Specs
The E 300 e combines a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine rated at 150 kW (204 PS, about 201 hp) with an electric motor of 95 kW (129 PS, about 127 hp) and 440 Nm, for a system output of 230 kW (313 PS, about 309 hp) and 550 Nm. It is the only plug-in E-Class offered with rear-wheel drive as well as 4MATIC all-wheel drive, and it reaches 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds as a rear-driver and 6.5 seconds as a 4MATIC, with top speeds of 236 and 234 km/h according to German manufacturer data. The E 400 e 4MATIC uses a more powerful version of the same engine, 185 kW (252 PS, about 249 hp), the same 95 kW motor, 280 kW (381 PS, about 376 hp) of system output and 650 Nm. Mercedes lists it at 5.3 seconds to 100 km/h and 250 km/h. A note on units: Mercedes quotes kW and PS in Europe, and PS is the metric horsepower, about 1.4 percent smaller than the imperial hp, so 381 PS equals roughly 376 hp. Israeli price sites print the PS figures as “hp”.
The AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ is a different drivetrain. Its AMG 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six makes 330 kW (449 PS, about 443 hp) and works with a 120 kW (163 PS, about 161 hp) electric motor with 480 Nm that sits inside the nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT transmission. Together they deliver 430 kW (585 PS, about 577 hp) and 750 Nm, and 450 kW (612 PS, about 604 hp) with the RACE START function, which comes with the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package. That is why the AMG is quoted as both 577 hp and 604 hp: the first is the normal rating, the second is launch-mode output. The sedan needs 4.0 seconds to 100 km/h (3.8 with the package) and the Estate 4.1 (3.9). The sedan is limited to 250 km/h, or 280 km/h with the optional AMG Driver’s Package. Mercedes-Benz USA quotes 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds for the 2027 sedan and 4.0 for the Estate. Standard equipment includes AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, rear-axle steering and AMG RIDE CONTROL adaptive suspension.

The sedan is 4,949 mm long, 1,880 mm wide without mirrors and has a 2,961 mm wheelbase, according to German catalogue data and the W214 reference specification; the roof height is about 1,480 mm. The battery sits under the load floor, so the plug-in sedan carries 370 litres of luggage, well below the larger boot of the non-plug-in E-Class. The plug-in Estate offers 460 litres, growing to 1,675 litres with the rear seats folded, according to German road tests and the launch coverage by electrive. That is still a useful load space for a luxury wagon.
Weight is the other cost of the battery. German manufacturer data lists a kerb weight of 2,210 kg for the rear-drive E 300 e and 2,265 kg for the E 300 e 4MATIC and the E 400 e 4MATIC. The fuel tank of the E 300 e holds 50 litres.

Charging & Battery
The E 300 e and E 400 e share a 25.4 kWh gross lithium-ion battery. Mercedes does not publish the usable capacity in the material we could open, so no net figure is given here; the AMG E 53 is the exception, with 28.6 kWh gross and 21.22 kWh usable, because part of the energy is held back for boosting and sporty driving. Mercedes says the plug-in E-Class charges at up to 11 kW on AC and up to 55 kW at public DC fast chargers, and a German data portal lists about 20 minutes for 10 to 80 percent on DC. The AMG E 53 also charges at 11 kW AC in Europe and offers a 60 kW DC charger on request, which Mercedes says takes the battery from 10 to 80 percent in around 20 minutes. In the US Mercedes-Benz USA lists the AMG at 9.6 kW AC and 60 kW DC.
German type-approval data shows the plug-in E-Class uses 19.1 to 21.4 kWh/100 km of electricity (E 300 e) and 19.2 to 21.5 kWh/100 km (E 400 e 4MATIC), with CO2 emissions of 12 to 20 g/km with a charged battery and 160 to 182 g/km on the E 400 e with a flat one. The AMG E 53 sedan is rated at 24.1 to 25.9 kWh/100 km plus 0.8 to 1.0 l/100 km in the weighted combined cycle, with 19 to 23 g/km. In the US Mercedes-Benz USA quotes up to 43 miles of electric range for the 2027 AMG E 53 sedan and up to 41 miles for the Estate.

Design & Interior
The plug-in E-Class looks like its mild-hybrid and diesel siblings, apart from small hybrid badges on the AMG. The AMG E 53 adds the AMG radiator grille with vertical slats, which is illuminated as standard, a separate AMG front apron with an extra cooler, a spoiler lip on the sedan boot lid and an AMG rear apron with a diffuser and two round twin tailpipes. It rides on 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 20-inch and 21-inch forged wheels as options.
Inside, the AMG gets electrically adjustable AMG sports seats in ARTICO man-made leather and MICROCUT microfibre with red stitching, a Nappa AMG Performance steering wheel and illuminated grey ash-wood trim with an AMG logo. The MBUX Superscreen with a passenger monitor is an option. The launch “Edition 1” of the AMG E 53 was offered for one year with MANUFAKTUR alpine grey or opalite white paint, 21-inch matt black forged wheels, black decor stripes and a black and yellow interior, for €27,370 extra in Germany.
Technology & Features
The plug-in E-Class carries the standard W214 technology, including the dual-screen MBUX layout with a 12.3-inch driver display and a 14.4-inch central screen, according to launch coverage. Mercedes added a PowerNap relaxation programme for plug-in hybrids that is meant for charging stops. On the AMG E 53 the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes add two hybrid-specific modes, Electric and Battery Hold. Battery Hold keeps the charge level almost constant so the driver can save electric range for city traffic, and the car starts in Electric by default. The electromechanical brake booster blends the generator and the hydraulic brakes, and a three-level recuperation setting is selectable on the steering wheel.
The AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package adds a rear limited-slip differential, dynamic engine mounts, six-piston front brakes with 390 mm discs and the RACE START function. The rear-axle steering turns the rear wheels against the front wheels up to 100 km/h and with them above it.
Safety & ADAS
We did not verify a Euro NCAP, NHTSA or IIHS result for the plug-in variants, and Mercedes does not state an SAE automation level for the E-Class in the sources we could open, so none is given here. Equipment for driver assistance and safety differs by market and package; check the configurator of your market before ordering.

Pricing & Availability
In Germany Mercedes launched the plug-in E-Class sedan in autumn 2023. Launch prices reported by AUTOHAUS were €70,100 for the E 300 e, €72,800 for the E 300 e 4MATIC and €80,250 for the E 400 e 4MATIC, and the Estate cost €2,500 more. A German data portal (angurten.de, April 2026) lists the sedans at €69,615, €72,352 and €76,160 in the Avantgarde Advanced line. We could not open Mercedes-Benz Germany’s own price list, so these are third-party figures. The AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ went on sale in Germany in April 2024 at €109,242 for the sedan and €111,741 for the Estate, according to Mercedes, plus €27,370 for the Edition 1 package. This is the April 2024 launch price; we found no 2026 German list price for the AMG.
In the United States Mercedes-Benz USA sells the E-Class in the 2027 model year, and the AMG E 53 HYBRID is the only plug-in: the sedan starts at $91,100 and the Estate at $95,200 on the MBUSA model pages, before the destination charge, with 577 hp and up to 43 and 41 miles of electric range. The 2026 AMG E 53 Estate was priced from $93,350. The US E 450 4MATIC is not a plug-in; it is a 375 hp mild hybrid. In Israel the E 300 e is sold by the Mercedes-Benz importer Colmobil. The importer's website (mercedes-benz.co.il, undated) lists the E 300 e at NIS 539,900 (Elite), NIS 569,900 (Elite AMG Line), NIS 599,900 (Signature) and NIS 629,900 (Signature AMG Line) including VAT, plus a registration fee of NIS 5,499, and the AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC Racing at NIS 909,900. Israeli pages print 313 for what is PS (about 309 hp) and quote 100 km of electric range.
How It Compares
The closest sibling is the Mercedes-Benz C 400 e, which we have covered separately. Its 290 kW (394 PS, about 389 hp) system sits between the E 300 e at 309 hp and the E 400 e at 376 hp, and it starts at €73,548 in Germany, about €3,900 above the E 300 e sedan on the data-portal list and €2,600 below the E 400 e 4MATIC. The C-Class battery is 25.4 kWh gross with 19.53 kWh usable, so the larger E-Class mostly offers more interior space and, on the E 400 e, more power for similar electric range. The closest direct rival is the 2027 BMW 530e sedan: 295 hp, a 19.4 kWh net battery and up to 103 km WLTP electric range from €66,700 in Germany (BMW price list valid from November 2026). That is about €2,900 less than the E 300 e sedan on the data-portal list and 14 hp less; BMW quotes net battery capacity while Mercedes quotes gross, so the two battery figures are not directly comparable. The AMG E 53 has no direct rival in our catalogue: at 577 hp it sits in a different price class.
- Three clearly different plug-in hybrids: 309 hp E 300 e, 376 hp E 400 e 4MATIC and 577 hp AMG E 53, each as sedan and Estate
- Real plug-in range: 25.4 kWh gross and 87 to 106 km WLTP electric range, with 11 kW AC and 55 kW DC charging
- The AMG E 53 adds a 28.6 kWh battery (21.22 kWh usable), 93 to 101 km of range and 0-100 km/h in 4.0 seconds
- The battery costs space and weight: 370 litres in the sedan, 460 litres in the Estate and a kerb weight of 2,210 to 2,265 kg
- DC charging is limited to 55 kW on the E 300 e and E 400 e, and the E 300 e and E 400 e are not sold in the US, where only the AMG E 53 is a plug-in
The plug-in E-Class makes sense for buyers who can charge at home and want a conventional luxury sedan or wagon that covers most daily trips on electricity: 25.4 kWh, up to about 100 km WLTP, and a choice between 309 hp and 376 hp. The E 300 e is the sensible pick, and the E 400 e 4MATIC adds real performance for a premium of about €3,800 over the E 300 e 4MATIC on the data-portal list. The AMG E 53 is a performance car with a plug, not an efficiency play. The trade-offs are boot space, weight and slow DC charging, and none of the German price lists we could open is Mercedes’ own. A solid, comfortable choice, but a plug-in rival with more electric range is easy to find.
