Toyota is poised to make a significant leap into the electric vehicle (EV) market with the unveiling of the 2027 Highlander BEV. This all-electric iteration of the popular Highlander SUV marks Toyota's first foray into the three-row electric SUV segment, specifically designed to cater to the demands of North American families. As part of Toyota's broader 'Beyond Zero' strategy, the Highlander BEV aims to blend practicality, comfort, and cutting-edge technology in a zero-emission package.

Design & Features: A Modern Electric Aesthetic

The 2027 Highlander BEV showcases a refreshed design language that distinguishes it from its gasoline-powered counterpart. While retaining the familiar Highlander silhouette, the BEV incorporates several key styling cues that emphasize its electric nature. Expect to see:

  • Sharper Body Lines: A more sculpted and aerodynamic profile contributes to improved efficiency.
  • Closed-Off Grille: A signature element of EVs, the closed grille streamlines airflow and enhances the vehicle's futuristic appeal.
  • Extended Wheelbase: A longer wheelbase provides increased interior space, particularly in the third row, and enhances ride stability.
  • Optimized Aerodynamics: Subtle design tweaks, such as a redesigned rear spoiler and underbody panels, minimize drag and maximize range.

Inside, the Highlander BEV prioritizes spaciousness and user-friendly technology. The cabin boasts three rows of seating, accommodating up to eight passengers. A large 14-inch central touchscreen display serves as the command center for infotainment and vehicle functions, while a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster provides key driving information at a glance. An optional panoramic sunroof floods the interior with natural light, creating an airy and inviting atmosphere. Toyota has also emphasized noise reduction, employing advanced sound-deadening materials to minimize road and wind noise for a more serene driving experience. Over-the-air (OTA) updates ensure that the vehicle's software remains up-to-date with the latest features and improvements.

Performance & Specs: Powertrain Options and Range

The Highlander BEV will be available in both single-motor (FWD) and dual-motor (AWD) configurations, offering a choice between efficiency and enhanced traction. Toyota has confirmed two powertrain options. Here are the key specifications:

  • Single-Motor (FWD):
    • Drivetrain: Front-Wheel Drive
    • Battery Capacity: 77 kWh
    • Estimated Range: Approximately 287 miles (462 km)
  • Dual-Motor (AWD):
    • Drivetrain: All-Wheel Drive
    • Battery Capacity: 77 kWh or 95.8 kWh
    • Power Output: Up to 338 horsepower (estimated)
    • Range:
      • 77 kWh Battery: Approximately 270 miles (435 km)
      • 95.8 kWh Battery: Up to 320 miles (515 km)

The Highlander BEV incorporates a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port for DC fast charging, enabling rapid replenishment of the battery at compatible charging stations. The vehicle also features a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) bidirectional charging system, allowing owners to use the battery's energy to power external devices or appliances. Standard safety features include the latest iteration of Toyota Safety Sense, a suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) designed to enhance safety and prevent accidents. A Digital Key 2.0 system allows drivers to use their smartphones as a key to access and start the vehicle.

Market Availability & Pricing: Anticipated Launch and Cost

While Toyota has not yet announced official pricing for the 2027 Highlander BEV, industry analysts estimate a starting price range of $55,000 to $60,000. This figure is based on comparable electric SUVs in the market and Toyota's historical pricing strategy. The Highlander BEV is expected to go on sale in the United States towards the end of 2026. Trim levels at launch will include XLE FWD, XLE AWD, and Limited AWD. Higher trim levels will offer the larger 95.8 kWh battery pack, an expanded suite of driver-assistance features, and premium interior finishes.

Pros & Cons: Weighing the Advantages and Disadvantages

Pros:

  • Three-Row Seating: Accommodates large families comfortably.
  • Competitive Range: Offers a usable range for daily commutes and longer road trips.
  • Advanced Technology: Equipped with the latest infotainment, safety, and connectivity features.
  • Toyota Reliability: Benefits from Toyota's reputation for dependability and build quality.

Cons:

  • Unconfirmed Pricing: Official pricing remains unknown, creating uncertainty for potential buyers.
  • Charging Infrastructure: The availability of public charging stations may vary depending on location.
  • Potential for Long Wait Times: High demand for EVs could lead to extended delivery times.

Conclusion: A Promising Entry into the Electric SUV Market

The 2027 Toyota Highlander BEV represents a significant step forward for Toyota in the electric vehicle segment. By combining the practicality of a three-row SUV with the efficiency and performance of an electric powertrain, the Highlander BEV aims to appeal to a wide range of buyers. With its modern design, advanced technology, and competitive range, the Highlander BEV is poised to become a major player in the rapidly growing electric SUV market, solidifying Toyota's commitment to a zero-emission future. The vehicle blends the familiar Highlander characteristics with modern EV technology.
