The BMW i4 is the electric Gran Coupe built on the same G26 platform as the combustion 4 Series Gran Coupe, and after the mid-cycle update of 2024 and a second round of upgrades in July 2025 it now sits as a four-model range: i4 eDrive35, eDrive40, xDrive40 and the new top model, the i4 M60 xDrive, which replaces the former M50. All four use a rear-biased electric layout, a lithium-ion battery of 70.3 kWh or 83.9 kWh gross, and an 11 kW on-board charger. Silicon carbide semiconductors in the power electronics, introduced with the July 2025 production change, cut consumption by roughly 4.5 percent and add up to 22 km of range, according to BMW. The range now spans 210 kW (286 PS, about 282 hp) at the entry point to 442 kW (601 PS, about 593 hp) for the M60 xDrive, with WLTP ranges up to 613 km for the eDrive40. In Germany BMW Germany's price list puts the i4 from €58,200 for the eDrive35, and in Israel it is sold by Delek Motors.
Performance & Specs
The i4 eDrive35 has a single rear motor rated at 210 kW (286 PS, about 282 hp) and 400 Nm, and BMW quotes 0-100 km/h in 6.0 seconds with a top speed of 190 km/h. The eDrive40 raises output to 250 kW (340 PS, about 335 hp) and 430 Nm, which brings the sprint to 5.6 seconds at the same 190 km/h limit. The xDrive40 adds a second motor on the front axle for all-wheel drive, with 295 kW (401 PS, about 396 hp) and 600 Nm, a 5.1 second sprint and 200 km/h. (PS is the metric horsepower, about 1.4 percent smaller than the imperial hp used here.)
The flagship is the i4 M60 xDrive, which BMW announced in May 2025 for production from July 2025. Its system output rose by 42 kW (57 PS) over the M50 it replaces, to 442 kW (601 PS, about 593 hp), and the 0-100 km/h time drops to 3.7 seconds, with a top speed of 225 km/h. BMW USA describes the same car as making 510 hp at start-up and 593 hp when the Sport setting of My Modes is selected, so the peak figure should be read as a boost value. The M60 also weighs the most in the range at 2,210 kg without driver under the EU standard, against 1,995 kg for the eDrive35.
Range is where the July 2025 update shows most. BMW Germany's price list gives WLTP ranges of 424 to 514 km for the eDrive35, 505 to 613 km for the eDrive40, 483 to 546 km for the xDrive40 and 434 to 551 km for the M60 xDrive, with combined consumption of 14.7 to 17.6, 14.9 to 18.0, 16.7 to 18.9 and 16.6 to 20.9 kWh/100 km respectively. The spread between the minimum and maximum values comes from wheel size and equipment, so a car on the largest wheels will land at the short end of its band.

The i4 is a four-door Gran Coupe with a large tailgate, so the 470 L boot (1,290 L with the rear seats folded) is usable for bulky luggage in a way a conventional sedan boot is not. It measures 4,783 mm long, 1,852 mm wide and 1,448 mm high on a 2,856 mm wheelbase, which is nearly the same footprint as the 4 Series Gran Coupe it shares its platform with. Braked towing capacity is 1,600 kg on every variant, according to BMW Germany's price list, and unbraked towing is 750 kg. The EU kerb weights run from 1,995 kg for the eDrive35 to 2,045 kg for the eDrive40, 2,185 kg for the xDrive40 and 2,210 kg for the M60 xDrive, all measured without a driver.

Charging & Battery
The eDrive35 carries a 70.3 kWh gross (67.1 kWh net) battery and charges at up to 180 kW DC, taking 32 minutes from 10 to 80 percent. The other three variants use an 83.9 kWh gross battery, which BMW lists as 81.3 kWh net for the eDrive40 and xDrive40 and 81.1 kWh net for the M60 xDrive, with DC charging up to 205 kW and 10-80 percent in 30 minutes. AC charging is 11 kW on three phases for every variant, and BMW Germany's price list gives a full charge from a wallbox as 7 hours for the eDrive35 and 8 hours 30 minutes for the others. As a sanity check, the eDrive40's 613 km and 81.3 kWh net imply about 13.3 kWh/100 km at the battery, and the official WLTP consumption of 14.9 kWh/100 km at the wall is about 12 percent higher, which is the normal size of charging losses.

Design & Interior
The 2024 update gave the i4 a 3D mesh-effect kidney grille, bi-LED headlights and full-LED rear lights with a 3D graphic, all of which can be seen in the press images. The model name sits on the right of the tailgate, and the M60 xDrive adds Cerium Grey details on the grille frame, air intakes and mirror caps, high-gloss black window frames and a rear spoiler, according to BMW Italia's equipment list. The exterior door handles are body-colour and illuminated on all variants. Inside, the dashboard follows a clean horizontal layout with a widescreen display above a row of air vents and a physical iDrive rotary controller on the centre console, with a light trim strip across the dashboard in the pictured car. There is no front trunk, so the 470 L tailgate is the i4's only luggage space.
For buyers choosing between trims, the decision is mainly about drivetrain and battery rather than equipment. The two rear-drive cars differ in battery size, power and charging peak: the eDrive35 gives up 13.6 kWh of gross capacity, 40 kW of motor output and 25 kW of DC charging power compared with the eDrive40, in exchange for a lower entry price. The xDrive40 pays for its second motor with about 67 km less WLTP range than the eDrive40, while the M60 xDrive, at up to 551 km, stays close to the xDrive40's 546 km despite its far higher output.
Technology & Features
The widescreen display and iDrive controller are the centre of the i4's cabin. BMW Italia's data sheet lists the Active Guard Plus safety package, Intelligent Emergency Call, a pedestrian warning sound, Isofix on the rear seats and tyre pressure monitoring as standard on every i4, with a driver attention assistant on all variants. BMW Italia lists the control layout as the same on all four variants, and the M60 xDrive differs mainly in its exterior details and drivetrain rather than its standard safety equipment. Further assistance and comfort functions are sold as options that differ by market, so buyers should check the local price list for the exact content of each trim.
Safety & ADAS
Every i4 comes with Active Guard Plus, a driver attention assistant, front and side airbags for driver and front passenger, head airbags for both seat rows, ABS with Brake Assist and Cornering Brake Control, extended DSC stability control and an electronic parking brake. Full LED rear lights and bi-LED headlights are standard. The i4 was tested by the ADAC, which gave the xDrive40 M version an overall rating of 1.7. BMW does not publish an SAE automation level for the i4, and the more advanced driving assistance functions are optional extras that vary by market.

Pricing & Availability
The i4 has been built in Munich since late 2021, and the updated range in this article went into production in July 2025. BMW Germany's price list shows the eDrive35 at €58,200, the eDrive40 at €61,300, the xDrive40 at €64,800 and the M60 xDrive at €73,700, including 19 percent VAT and before options; launch prices in July 2025 were slightly lower (the M60 xDrive at €72,900 according to EV Database). BMW Italia's price list, valid from 28 May 2026 for production from 1 July 2026, shows the i4 eDrive35 from €58,770, the eDrive40 from €58,870, the xDrive40 from €63,870 and the M60 xDrive from €78,470 with 22 percent VAT, before registration and delivery charges. In the United States, the 2026 i4 eDrive40, xDrive40 and M60 carry MSRPs of $57,900, $62,300 and $70,700 before the destination fee, according to BMWBlog, and the eDrive35 was dropped from the US range. In Israel, the importer Delek Motors began selling the updated i4 in May 2025, and the auto.co.il catalogue lists five versions of the 2026 i4 from ₪399,900 to ₪609,900, while iCar and carzone.co.il list three versions at ₪494,900, ₪524,900 and ₪614,900 (M60 xDrive), so the current Israeli price is unresolved between sources.
How It Compares
The i4's rivals have moved ahead on range. The Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+ is reported at about 790 km WLTP and €55,859 in Germany, nearly 180 km more than the i4 eDrive40 for about €5,400 less, although its 268 hp is well below the BMW's 335 hp. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 in its 84 kWh rear-drive version gives up to 680 km and 225 hp for €55,300, so it undercuts the eDrive40 by €6,000 and still beats its range. The Audi A6 Sportback e-tron is larger and starts at €62,800 for the base 286 PS (282 hp) car, rated at 559 to 636 km WLTP, with up to 777 km WLTP in the Performance version and up to 496 hp across the range, putting it in the same price bracket as the eDrive40. The i4's case rests on its rear-drive handling and a line-up that reaches 593 hp in the M60 xDrive, which is above the 496 hp that the A6 e-tron range offers in normal driving. The rival figures are German list prices and WLTP ranges from each maker's own data.
- Four variants from 210 kW (282 hp) to 442 kW (593 hp), with 0-100 km/h between 6.0 and 3.7 seconds
- Up to 613 km WLTP and 205 kW DC charging with 10-80% in 30 minutes, helped by the silicon carbide update
- Practical hatchback-style tailgate with 470 L, 1,290 L folded, and 1,600 kg braked towing on every version
- Range is behind newer rivals: the Mercedes CLA 250+ is reported at about 790 km and the Hyundai Ioniq 6 up to 680 km WLTP against the i4's 613 km best
- Heavy, at 1,995 to 2,210 kg without driver, and the M60 xDrive's range is only up to 551 km WLTP and its consumption up to 20.9 kWh/100 km
The i4 is no longer the newest electric fastback in its class, but the July 2025 upgrades gave it up to 22 km more range and a genuine 601 PS flagship in the M60 xDrive, on top of a 205 kW charging peak. The eDrive40 is the sensible centre of the range, with 335 hp, up to 613 km WLTP and a price around €61,300 in Germany. Buyers who care most about range and price will find the Mercedes CLA and the Hyundai Ioniq 6 stronger on paper, while those who want rear-drive dynamics, a big tailgate and a wide choice of power levels will still find the i4 an appealing choice.
