Mercedes-Benz has opened US order books for the 2027 G 580 with EQ Technology, the four-motor electric version of the G-Class that the brand also calls the G 580 Electric. The 2027 model year keeps the ladder-frame body and the powertrain, and changes the things owners actually complain about: the charging hardware, the range rating and the time spent at a fast charger. Pricing starts at $163,750 before a $1,450 destination charge, so $165,200 on the road, which is $650 more than the 2026 model year. The EPA now rates the truck at 249 miles (401 km) combined and 71 MPGe, and the DC port has switched from CCS1 to the North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug used by Tesla Superchargers. Power stays at 432 kW (587 PS / 579 hp), so the G-Class keeps its unusual party trick of turning on the spot with G-TURN.
Performance & Specs
The G 580 uses four permanently excited synchronous motors, one at each wheel, integrated into the reinforced ladder frame close to the hubs. Together they deliver up to 432 kW (587 PS, about 579 hp) and 1,164 Nm (859 lb-ft) of torque, with peak torque available from a standstill. Each motor works through its own two-speed transmission, and a selectable Low Range gearing gives the truck the crawl ratio a G-Class buyer expects. Mercedes quotes 4.6 seconds for 0-60 mph in the US (4.7 seconds for 0-100 km/h in its global data) and an electronically limited top speed of 112 mph (180 km/h). Curb weight is listed at 6,746 lb (about 3,060 kg), which is why the numbers are impressive but never feel light.
Because every wheel has its own motor, the software can do things a mechanical G-Class cannot. Virtual differential locks stand in for the mechanical locks of the combustion truck, using torque vectoring to send drive to whichever wheel has grip. G-TURN lets the SUV rotate in place on loose surfaces by driving the left and right wheels in opposite directions, up to two full turns about its own axis, and it works in Low Range with the Rock mode of DYNAMIC SELECT. G-STEERING tightens the turning circle off-road at speeds up to 25 km/h by pivoting the truck around the inside rear wheel. The drivetrain is the same one used since the G 580 debuted, and the 2027 update leaves it untouched.

The G 580 looks and measures like its combustion siblings: a boxy five-seat body on a 2,890 mm (113.8 in) wheelbase, 1,931 mm wide and 1,986 mm tall. Mercedes-Benz USA lists front headroom of 41.9 in and rear legroom of 39.5 in, so the back bench is a proper adult space rather than a token gesture. Cargo space is listed at 34.8 cu ft in the US, while Mercedes’ global data gives 555 litres behind the rear seats and up to 1,990 litres with them folded. There is no frunk. The truck carries the same rear-mounted spare wheel as the petrol G-Class, and the spare wheel ring is part of the standard equipment list.
Off-road figures are where the ladder frame pays off. Mercedes quotes a fording depth of 850 mm (33.5 in), which is 5.9 inches more than the G 550 and AMG G 63, plus a 32-degree approach angle, 30.7-degree departure angle, 20.3-degree breakover angle, stability on side slopes of up to 35 degrees and the ability to climb a 100 percent grade on suitable surfaces. The one caveat for anyone with a horse trailer is that the US spec sheet lists towing capacity as not applicable, so the G 580 is not rated to tow.

Charging & Battery
Charging is the headline change for 2027. The old single inlet that used CCS1 for DC has been replaced by two separate connectors behind one flap: a NACS port for DC fast charging and a J1772 port for AC. The Mercedes-Benz USA page lists a 117 kWh battery, a DC charging speed of 200 kW and a 10-80% time of 29 minutes, down from 32 minutes on the 2026 model year. The 200 kW figure is the peak the truck itself can accept, and Mercedes-Benz USA does not publish the charger power used for the 29-minute test, so treat the time as a manufacturer figure rather than a guarantee. The battery architecture is a conventional 400 V class system rather than an 800 V one, which is why the peak sits well below the fastest rivals.
The onboard AC charger is rated at 9.6 kW in the US, with a full 0-100% charge listed at 13.6 hours on a 240 V connection. The Mercedes-Benz USA equipment list also names a Mercedes-Benz Power Charger and a CCS1 DC fast-charging adapter as standard, with a Wallbox as an accessory, which helps at stations that have not yet moved to NACS. Efficiency has improved with the range: the EPA now rates the G 580 at 71 MPGe, up from 62 MPGe, and 249 miles combined, up from 239 miles. Divide the 117 kWh pack by the 401 km rating and you get roughly 29 kWh per 100 km, which matches the 48 kWh per 100 miles figure that outlets quote from the EPA label.

Design & Interior
From the outside the G 580 is unmistakably a G-Class: flat glass, exposed hinges, a vertical grille and round LED headlamps that light up as a ring on the electric model. Standard equipment in the US includes AMG body styling, 20-inch AMG 10-spoke wheels with black accents on 275/50R20 tyres, a stainless-steel spare tyre ring and stainless-steel running boards. Buyers can go much further with the MANUFAKTUR programme, including dark chrome trim, black bumpers and wheel arches, a choice of roof colours and a MANUFAKTUR Logo Package, and Mercedes says the G-Class offers over a million ways to individualise the truck. Option packages on the US page range from the $2,250 Night Package to the $12,000 Exclusive Interior Package Plus.
Inside, the cabin follows the current G-Class with a wide dashboard, two 12.3-inch displays, Nappa leather upholstery, a microfibre headliner, 64-colour ambient lighting and a power tilt and slide glass sunroof. Front seats are power adjustable with memory, heated and with heated armrests, and the rear bench is heated and splits 60/40. Optional extras include active multicontour front seats with massage, ventilated front seats, diamond-stitched Nappa leather and an MBUX high-end rear-seat entertainment system with wireless headsets.
Technology & Features
MBUX runs on a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, with “Hey Mercedes” voice control, augmented-reality navigation, multiple user profiles, biometric authentication and over-the-air software updates. The Offroad Cockpit view shows compass, elevation, steering angle, torque output, ambient temperature and tyre pressure as customisable tiles, and the Transparent Hood display uses the cameras to show what is in front of the nose on a climb. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as are wireless phone charging with NFC pairing and a Burmester 3D surround sound system with Dolby Atmos. G-ROAR, the sound experience of the electric G-Class, is part of the standard equipment list.
Safety & ADAS
The G 580 carries the driver-assistance suite Mercedes-Benz USA lists as standard on the model: Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC adaptive cruise, Active Steering Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist with Exit Warning Assist, Active Emergency Stop Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, rear cross-traffic alert and a Surround View System. Passive safety includes 11 airbags with a front-centre airbag, PRE-SAFE and PRE-SAFE Sound, and a 10-year Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call. Mercedes lists Dashcam as an option. The suite is a Level 2 hands-on system rather than the conditional-automation Drive Pilot that is offered on some other Mercedes models.

Pricing & Availability
US order books for the 2027 G 580 Electric opened on September 29, 2026. The starting MSRP is $163,750, and a $1,450 destination charge takes the total to $165,200, a rise of $650 over the 2026 model year. That places the electric G between the combustion G 550 at $153,900 and the AMG G 63 at $198,750, according to the Mercedes-Benz USA site. Delivery timing has not been stated in the coverage we found, so buyers should confirm dates with their dealer. Outside the US, Mercedes-Benz Germany lists the electric G-Class with 447-479 km of WLTP range, 4.7 seconds for 0-100 km/h and a 29-minute 10-80% charge, but the European market runs to different specifications and pricing.
How It Compares
Two other luxury electric SUVs already covered on FreshMotors show how the G 580 is positioned. The 2027 Range Rover Electric makes 542 hp and starts at $138,000, about $25,750 less than the G 580 before destination, and it has the longer EPA rating of 333 miles against the G-Class’s 249. The 2026 Cadillac Escalade IQ has 680 hp and starts from $129,795 for the Luxury trim, roughly $34,000 below the Mercedes, with a GM-estimated range of around 460 miles. Neither is a direct match for a 2,890 mm ladder-frame truck with Low Range and G-TURN, but they show what the same money buys in range and power. The G 580 is the only one of the three with four motors and a physical off-road gearbox, and it is the one with the shortest range.
For a value contrast from the Chinese market, our DongFeng M-Hero 1 coverage describes a body-on-frame quad-motor off-roader with up to 1,073 hp that starts from $95,020 in China, and it is often positioned against the G-Class. That car is not sold in the US, so it is a spec contrast rather than a cross-shop for American buyers.
- Four motors, G-TURN and virtual locks add off-road tricks no combustion G-Class has, alongside 850 mm fording and a 100 percent grade climb
- Native NACS port, 200 kW peak and 10-80% in 29 minutes improve daily usability over the 2026 model year
- 579 hp and 1,164 Nm deliver 4.6 seconds 0-60 mph in an unmistakable G-Class body
- 249 miles of EPA range and 200 kW peak charging trail luxury electric rivals such as the Range Rover Electric
- At about 6,746 lb and $165,200 with destination, it is heavy and expensive, and it is not rated for towing
The 2027 G 580 Electric fixes the most practical complaints about the first model year: it now has a NACS port, a longer EPA range and a shorter fast-charge stop, for $650 more. It is still an expensive, heavy truck with modest range and a 200 kW charging peak, and it cannot tow. Buyers who want the most capable electric off-roader with the G-Class badge should be happy, while buyers who want range and speed of charging for the money will find better numbers elsewhere.
