The second-generation MG HS is a five-seat family SUV, 4,670 mm long, that SAIC's MG brand sells with two electrified powertrains: the HS Hybrid+, a full hybrid (HEV) that cannot be plugged in, and the HS plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which MG calls Super Hybrid in Australia and which Israeli listings call the MG EHS. Both share the same body, the same dual 12.3-inch screens and the same 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The Hybrid+ (HEV) delivers 165 kW (224 PS, about 221 hp) with only a 1.8 kWh battery, while the newest PHEV, as sold in the UK and Australia, pairs a 24.7 kWh battery with 220 kW (299 PS, about 295 hp) and up to 75 miles (121 km) of WLTP electric range. MG UK's website currently shows the HS Hybrid+ from £30,495 (~$40,520) and the HS Plug-in Hybrid from £33,495 (~$44,510). The powertrain type is written next to every figure below, because the two cars are very different to live with.
Performance & Specs
In the HS Hybrid+ (HEV) a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with 105 kW (143 PS, about 141 hp) works with an electric motor of 146 kW (199 PS, about 196 hp) through a two-speed dedicated hybrid transmission, and MG states a combined 165 kW (224 PS, about 221 hp) and 340 Nm. The front-wheel-drive car reaches 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 7.9 seconds and 190 km/h, according to MG UK launch material and Israeli and German listings. Its 1.8 kWh battery is small, so the car cannot be charged from the mains; it recharges from the engine and braking and the motor runs the car at low speed. WLTP combined consumption is 5.5 L/100 km (51.3 mpg) for the SE and 48.7 mpg (5.8 L/100 km) for the Trophy in the UK. (PS is the metric horsepower, about 1.4 percent smaller than the imperial hp used here.)
The HS plug-in hybrid (PHEV) uses the same 1.5-litre turbo, with a 154 kW (209 PS, about 206 hp) traction motor and a 24.7 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. MG Australia quotes a combined output of 220 kW (299 PS, about 295 hp) and 350 Nm, and UK dealers list 6.8 seconds from 0 to 62 mph, which is a claimed figure rather than one printed on MG UK's site. Some UK listings print the output as "299 bhp", but 299 is the PS figure, so the imperial value is about 295 hp. MG UK states up to 75 miles (121 km) of electric range on the WLTP combined cycle, and a CO2 figure of 12 g/km has been reported for the UK car. MG Australia quotes up to 135 km on the NEDC cycle, a different and more generous test, so the two ranges should not be compared directly.
The plug-in HS sold in Germany since its 2024 launch and listed in Israel carries a different specification: 200 kW (272 PS, about 268 hp) from a 105 kW engine and a 135 kW electric motor, with a 21.4 kWh battery and 100 km of WLTP electric range according to MG Germany (109 km in the Israeli catalogue). Israeli sites print the 272 PS as "272 hp". Those figures belong to that 200 kW car and are not mixed with the 220 kW figures used in the rest of this article.

Charging & Battery
Only the PHEV charges from the grid. Its 24.7 kWh battery is rated at about 23.2 kWh usable by UK owners, and MG UK lists up to 75 miles of WLTP electric range, so the car can cover many daily commutes without using petrol. The on-board AC charger is 6.6 kW according to Car Keys, which gives a full charge in roughly three to four hours on a home wallbox, while MG Australia says a standard household socket needs under 13 hours. MG Australia also mentions vehicle-to-load (V2L) output for camping and similar uses on the Super Hybrid. As a rough check, 23.2 kWh over 121 km works out to about 19 kWh/100 km battery to wheels, which is plausible for a heavy SUV on the WLTP cycle. The Hybrid+ (HEV) has no charging port at all and relies on its 1.8 kWh battery being topped up by the engine and regenerative braking.

Design & Interior
The facelifted HS carries a wide, black grille with chrome detailing, slim LED headlights and a full-length LED taillight bar, along with silver roof rails and a rear spoiler, as MG UK describes it. The press images show the car in blue, red, white, grey and silver, and the plug-in version wears a Super Hybrid badge on the tailgate. Inside, a curved dashboard carries two 12.3-inch displays, wireless smartphone charging and a gear selector on the console, with black or optional red leather-style and suede-style upholstery on Trophy models. Trophy cars add a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control and a power tailgate, according to MG UK. The cabin is roomy in both rows, though one reviewer found the middle rear seat compromised by a floor hump.
Technology & Features
The two 12.3-inch screens run MG's iSMART connected-car system, which lets the owner lock and unlock the car, find it, check fuel level and tyre pressure, pre-set the cabin climate and pre-heat the seats from a phone. A Bluetooth key allows the car to be locked, unlocked and started from a smartphone, and satellite navigation with live services is fitted to Trophy models. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. The Hybrid+ offers Eco, Normal and Sport drive modes with adjustable regenerative braking, according to MG Australia. MG backs the car in the UK with a seven-year warranty.
Safety & ADAS
Every HS comes with the MG Pilot driver-assistance suite as standard, which includes adaptive cruise control with intelligent speed limit assist, active emergency braking with pedestrian and bicycle detection, forward collision warning, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, blind-zone detection with lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert and door open warning. The Hybrid+ adds traffic jam assist in the UK. The HS (petrol) earned five stars from Euro NCAP in 2024, which Euro NCAP extended to the plug-in hybrid in 2025, and the HS has five ANCAP stars in Australia.

Pricing & Availability
In the United Kingdom, MG's website shows the HS Hybrid+ (HEV) at £30,495 (~$40,520) in SE and £32,995 (~$43,840) in Trophy grade, and the HS Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) at £33,495 (~$44,510) in SE and £35,995 (~$47,830) in Trophy, against £27,495 (~$36,540) for the petrol HS, as read on 28 October 2026. In Germany, MG's own list read on 28 October 2026 shows the Hybrid+ (HEV) at €35,990 (~$40,070) in Comfort and €38,290 (~$42,630) in Luxury, and the 200 kW PHEV at €40,990 (~$45,630) in Comfort and €43,290 (~$48,190) in Luxury, as recommended prices including VAT and excluding delivery; the Hybrid+ is rated at 5.5 L/100 km WLTP. In Australia the Hybrid+ went on sale in July 2025 and the plug-in Super Hybrid followed with deliveries from September 2025; press reports put the Hybrid+ at A$40,990 (Excite, ~$28,830) and A$44,990 (Essence, ~$31,640) drive-away in October 2025, and the Super Hybrid at A$47,990 (~$33,750) and A$51,990 (~$36,560). Those Super Hybrid figures are pre-promotion prices: the promotional A$42,990 (~$30,230) and A$46,990 (~$33,050) ended on 30 June 2026 (The Beep, 24 April 2026). All Australian prices are as reported by the press (Hybrid+ in October 2025, Super Hybrid on 24 April 2026), so the current price is unconfirmed. MG Australia's own page shows no prices.
In Israel, MG's importer is Car-East (Lubinsky Group), and the Israeli HS is listed in petrol, HEV and PHEV Luxury versions. Car-East cut its list prices on 6 August 2026, according to Queen of the Road and CarTube (both 6 August 2026): the HS Hybrid+ (HEV) now lists at ₪158,888 (~$50,830), down from ₪176,888 (~$56,590), and the EHS plug-in hybrid (PHEV) at ₪175,888 (~$56,270), down from ₪188,888 (~$60,430). The ₪188,888 that Carzone shows for the PHEV is the old, pre-cut price. The iCar catalogue shows the same two prices, with 224 hp (PS) for the HEV and 272 hp (PS), 21.4 kWh and 109 km of electric range for the PHEV, which Israelis call the MG EHS, and says they include VAT and are before the registration fee. The Israeli PHEV's figures are those of the 200 kW car and should not be read as the 220 kW UK and Australian specification. Availability in other markets is not confirmed as of October 2026.
How It Compares
Against the Kia Sportage, the HS is cheaper at both ends in the UK: the Hybrid+ starts £4,400 below the Sportage HEV's £34,895 (~$46,370) and the plug-in HS is £5,100 below the Sportage PHEV's listed £38,595 (~$51,290). The Sportage HEV has slightly more power at 236 hp against 221 hp, but the MG plug-in has 295 hp against 284 hp and a UK electric range of 121 km WLTP against up to 66 km (EU test, Germany) for the Kia, thanks to a battery of 24.7 kWh against 13.8 kWh. The Nissan Qashqai e-POWER starts at £33,615 (~$44,670) in the UK with 202 hp and, like the Hybrid+, cannot be plugged in, so the MG offers about 19 hp more for roughly £3,100 less. The rival prices are the UK on-the-road or list prices recorded in our own articles on each car, and the Kia PHEV was shown as available soon on Kia UK's model page.
- One body, two powertrains: a no-plug HEV from £30,495 (~$40,520) or a PHEV with up to 75 miles (121 km) WLTP electric range from £33,495 (~$44,510) in the UK
- PHEV output of 220 kW (299 PS / 295 hp) and a 24.7 kWh battery, far larger than the Kia Sportage PHEV's 13.8 kWh
- Large boot (507 L, 1,484 L folded), dual 12.3-inch screens and standard MG Pilot driver assistance, with a seven-year UK warranty
- The Hybrid+ (HEV) has a tiny 1.8 kWh battery, so it cannot drive far on electric power and uses about 5.5 L/100 km WLTP, and it is front-wheel drive only
- PHEV specifications differ between markets (220 kW and 24.7 kWh in the UK and Australia, 200 kW and 21.4 kWh in Germany and Israel), and there is no DC fast charging
The MG HS is a value family SUV that gives buyers a clear choice. The Hybrid+ (HEV) at 221 hp and about 5.5 L/100 km suits drivers who cannot or do not want to plug in, while the PHEV, with 295 hp and 121 km of WLTP electric range, is the stronger case and undercuts the Kia Sportage PHEV by about £5,000 (~$6,640) in the UK. Check which specification a local dealer is selling, because the plug-in HS has been sold with two different outputs and battery ratings. For UK buyers wanting a large hybrid SUV at a modest price, it is easy to recommend.
