The full-size luxury SUV segment is notoriously difficult to disrupt, heavily guarded by legacy European automakers and established internal-combustion nameplates. However, the 2026 NIO ES9 arrives not just to compete, but to rewrite the rulebook for massive, premium family haulers. Representing 11 years of brand innovation—as highlighted in NIO’s “Design for leadership” campaign—this all-electric flagship is billed as the largest electric SUV in China. Its dimensions and interior volume rival traditional multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs), and it is engineered for high-net-worth buyers who refuse to compromise on space, performance or technology.
NIO launched the ES9 in Beijing on May 27, 2026 and began deliveries on May 28. It is priced from about $74,300 (498,000 yuan) in China, or from about $58,200 (390,000 yuan) with the battery rented through Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS). It pairs a 102 kWh CATL battery on a 900-volt architecture with a dual-motor powertrain producing 697 hp, a suite of next-generation autonomous driving hardware and a serene six-seat cabin.
Performance & Powertrain Dynamics
| Powertrain | Dual-motor AWD BEV |
|---|---|
| Power | 520 kW (697 hp) |
| Torque | 700 Nm |
| 0–100 km/h | 4.3 s |
| Battery | 102 kWh |
| Range | 620 km CLTC (Executive Luxury) |
Motivating a vehicle of this magnitude takes serious firepower. The ES9 uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system: a 180 kW (241 hp) induction motor on the front axle and a 340 kW (456 hp) permanent magnet synchronous motor on the rear axle. Combined output is 520 kW (697 hp), backed by 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque.
That is enough to send a 2.85 to 2.9-tonne luxury SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, with the top speed electronically limited to 220 km/h. To make the power usable in all conditions, NIO put the flagship through winter testing in Yakeshi, Inner Mongolia, at temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius, where the intelligent AWD system showed strong torque vectoring and agility in the extreme cold.
| POWERTRAIN TYPE | BEV AWD (dual motor) |

Dimensions & Practicality

|---|---|
| Width | 2,029 mm |
| Height | 1,870 mm |
| Wheelbase | 3,250 mm |
| Turning radius | 5.4 m |
The sheer scale of the ES9 is its defining physical trait. At 5,365 mm long, 2,029 mm wide and 1,870 mm tall, it dwarfs NIO’s third-generation ES8 and is just 17 mm shorter than a Cadillac Escalade. The critical number is the 3,250 mm wheelbase, which allows a six-seat layout with executive-level space in all three rows: NIO quotes a 2,805 mm cabin length, up to 1,520 mm of second-row legroom and more than one meter of headroom in every row.
This cavernous interior sparked an industry rivalry. NIO’s management claimed that the ES9’s ride comfort and space could make consumers “forget about MPVs”, which drew a direct response from legacy MPV leaders such as Buick, whose Century MPV measures 5,230 mm. By out-measuring traditional luxury vans, the ES9 positions itself as the ultimate executive transport.
Practicality is a strong suit. NIO counts 816 liters of total cargo space: a 216-liter front trunk (frunk) plus a 600-liter rear cargo area, of which 477 liters sit above the floor and 123 liters in an underfloor compartment. Folding the third row expands the rear space to 1,586 liters. NIO says the space takes 13 suitcases with six passengers on board.

900V Architecture & Battery Tech
Energy storage comes from a 102 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) pack supplied by CATL. It delivers up to 620 km of CLTC range on the Executive Luxury trim and 600 km on the Executive Signature and Horizon Special trims.
The electrical architecture is the real marvel. The ES9 runs a 900-volt platform with 5C charging capability and up to 600 kW peak DC power. Independent estimates put a 10 to 80 percent charge at roughly 11 to 15 minutes, depending on the charger and battery temperature. As a NIO, the ES9 also plugs into the brand’s battery-swap network: a full pack swap takes about three minutes, and NIO counted 4,094 swap stations across China as of September 19, 2026.
Design & Interior Opulence
Aesthetically, the NIO ES9 is a masterclass in composed, assured styling. It adopts the brand’s latest design language, highlighted by a distinctive “Shark Nose” front fascia and micro-LED headlights that can project graphics, such as navigation arrows, onto the road. Pure vertical and horizontal lines create precise, fluid surfaces that deliver a drag coefficient of just 0.264 Cd, and the SUV is offered in seven exterior colors.
Inside, the cabin is an exercise in minimalist opulence. The centerpiece is a 15.6-inch AMOLED floating center screen running the SkyOS operating system. The second row features executive “Zero Gravity” seats with 26-way power adjustment, a 42-point massage system that includes a 20-point mechanical foot massage, and a 2-meter panoramic roof with sunshades. Rear passengers also get dual 16-inch 3.3K entertainment screens, a fridge and a 47-speaker, 3,020-watt audio system, for a private, first-class theater experience.
Technology & SkyRide Chassis
To make this 5,365 mm SUV handle with the agility of a much smaller vehicle, NIO fitted state-of-the-art chassis technology: a steer-by-wire system and rear-wheel steering that cut the turning radius to 5.4 meters (a turning circle of about 10.8 meters). On the Executive Signature and Horizon Special trims, NIO SkyRide fully active suspension, a 48V integrated hydraulic system paired with dual-chamber air springs, isolates the cabin from road imperfections; the Executive Luxury uses dual-chamber air springs with CDC adaptive dampers.
On the autonomous driving front, the ES9 uses the Aquila super-sensing system: three LiDARs (one on the roof, two on the front fenders) among 31 sensing units, processed by NIO’s in-house 5 nm Shenji NX9031 chip—one chip on the Executive Luxury and two on the higher trims. The NIO World Model powers the NOP+ assisted-driving suite, and the hardware is built to take on higher levels of autonomy through future over-the-air updates.
How It Compares
Against its premium Chinese contemporaries, the ES9 sits in the upper echelon of luxury and performance. The new-generation Li Auto L9 Livis costs 509,800 yuan (about $76,100), roughly 11,800 yuan (about $1,800) more than the ES9’s entry price, yet the NIO offers 134 more horsepower (697 vs 563 hp), a pure-electric 900V architecture instead of a range-extender hybrid, and about three-minute battery swaps; the Li Auto answers with 1,650 km of combined range. The AITO M9 starts at 479,800 yuan (about $71,600) in range-extender form with 667 hp and is also offered as a BEV with a 120 kWh battery and up to 750 km of CLTC range. Against both, the ES9 counters with steer-by-wire, rear-wheel steering and fully active suspension on the upper trims, while the M9 and L9 extenders can travel much farther on a single fill-up.
Pricing & Availability
NIO launched the ES9 in Beijing on May 27, 2026 with three trims: the Executive Luxury at 498,000 yuan (about $74,300), the Executive Signature at 558,000 yuan (about $83,300) and the Horizon Special at 628,000 yuan (about $93,700). Launch prices came in 30,000 yuan (5.7%) below the pre-sale prices announced on April 9. The Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option cuts the up-front price by 108,000 yuan (about $16,100), to 390,000, 450,000 and 520,000 yuan (about $58,200, $67,200 and $77,600), in exchange for a monthly battery fee of 1,128 yuan (about $168). Deliveries began on May 28 for the center-island second-row layout, with the aisle layout following in mid-July, and NIO delivered 24,497 ES9 units from launch through August 2026. The ES9 is sold in China only, and NIO has not announced a European launch date or price.
