The NIO ES8 has been the brand's runaway hit since its September 2025 launch — the third-generation SUV delivered its 150,000th unit on September 20, 2026, exactly one year after launch, and leads China's large-SUV segment. In July 2026 it gained a five-seat version that trades the third row for a huge cargo bay (1,334 litres behind the second row) and a lower entry price. Every ES8 — five, six, or seven-seat — shares the same 900V architecture, a 520 kW (697 hp) dual-motor powertrain, NIO's in-house Shenji NX9031 driver-assistance chip with three LiDAR units, and the brand's signature battery-swap network. The five-seat Executive Luxury costs RMB 382,800 (about $57,100) with the battery included, or RMB 274,800 (about $41,000) with NIO's Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) plan, all conversions at about 6.70 CNY per USD.
Performance & Specs
Every ES8 variant runs the same dual-motor all-wheel-drive layout: a 180 kW (241 hp) induction motor up front (300 Nm) paired with a 340 kW (456 hp) permanent-magnet synchronous motor at the rear (400 Nm), for a combined 520 kW (697 hp) and 700 Nm of torque. That's enough to launch a full-size SUV weighing roughly 2.6 tonnes (2,590-2,630 kg curb weight on the six/seven-seat versions) from 0-100 km/h in 3.97 seconds — supercar-adjacent numbers for a family flagship — with a top speed of 220 km/h. The whole package sits on NIO's NT3.0 900V platform, with a body structure NIO says is 89% aluminum alloy and high-strength steel and a 0.259 Cd drag coefficient. The five-seat model uses the identical powertrain but sheds the third row, and its CLTC range is 655 km versus 635 km for the six/seven-seat versions.

At 5,280 mm long on a 3,130 mm wheelbase, the ES8 is a genuinely full-size SUV, and the new five-seat layout turns that length into serious cargo capacity: dropping the third row gives a claimed 1,334 litres of boot space, expanding to 3,084 litres with the second row folded, while NIO quotes 7.05 square metres of usable cabin space. The six/seven-seat versions trade some of that for extra passenger capacity, with 547 litres behind the third row. Every configuration keeps a 230-litre powered frunk. Standard dual-chamber air suspension lets the ride height change across a 100 mm range, and the turning radius is 5.7 metres. On the six/seven-seat versions, Signature trims ride on 22-inch wheels with 265/40 R22 tyres, while Luxury trims use 21-inch wheels with 265/45 R21 tyres.

Charging & Battery
Every ES8 runs a standard 102 kWh CATL NMC battery on NIO's 900V architecture, with 4C charging and peak DC power of up to 420 kW; NIO has said a larger 120 kWh pack supporting 5C charging will follow, with no date announced. In independent testing of a six/seven-seat ES8 by China's XCX-Test, a 600 kW charger took the pack from 30% to 80% in about 19 minutes, with power peaking at 301 kW. The real party trick remains NIO's Power Swap network — 4,094 swap stations across China as of September 19, 2026 can swap a depleted pack for a full one in about 3 minutes, a capability few rivals in this segment can offer. Buyers who choose BaaS pay RMB 1,128 per month (about $168) to rent the 102 kWh battery.

Design & Interior
The ES8's exterior mixes double-decker crystal-pattern LED headlights, flush door handles and a full-width rear LED light bar for a clean, understated luxury look, backed by a 0.259 Cd drag coefficient. Inside is where the ES8 makes its real case against German rivals: the cabin uses Nappa leather and real-wood trim, and the front seats offer 20-way power adjustment. In the five-seat version the second-row seats recline to 138 degrees and add 16-point massage, heating and ventilation. A large electrochromic panoramic roof offers adjustable tint, and there's an 8.8-litre powered smart fridge in the cabin. NIO's five-seat pitch is a lounge-style second row for families who don't need a third row.
Technology & Features
The cabin runs NIO's Cedar intelligent system on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 cockpit chip, with the animated NOMI voice assistant on the dashboard. The five-seat version carries a 15.6-inch 3K AMOLED center display, a 21.4-inch Mini-LED overhead screen with Dolby Vision and an 8-inch rear control panel. A large 38-inch AR head-up display projects speed, navigation and driver-assistance overlays onto the windshield, so drivers rarely need to glance down at the instrument cluster. Audio comes from NIO's in-house "Tianqin" LYRA 8.1.4.2 system — 27 speakers driven by 2,600 watts with Dolby Atmos. Continuous OTA updates cover both software and driver-assistance features.
Safety & ADAS
Every third-generation ES8 — five, six or seven-seat — runs on NIO's self-developed 5nm Shenji NX9031 chip, which NIO positions as equivalent to four NVIDIA Orin-X chips, alongside a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 cockpit chip. The Aquila sensing suite has 31 sensors, including three LiDAR units (one long-range roof unit and two wide-angle side units) and a 4D imaging radar. The system supports NIO's NOP+ point-to-point navigation-assisted driving and automated parking, with 360-degree perception around the car. The five-seat version runs a new version of the Cedar system on this same hardware.

Pricing & Availability
The third-generation ES8 launched in China on September 20, 2025 (NIO Day), with deliveries starting the next day, and reached 150,000 deliveries on September 20, 2026, one year to the day after launch. The five-seat version launched July 9, 2026, with deliveries from July 10: the Executive Luxury (called Executive Premium on NIO's English-language site) costs RMB 382,800 (about $57,100) with the battery included or RMB 274,800 (about $41,000) with BaaS, and the Executive Signature costs RMB 422,800 (about $63,100) or RMB 314,800 (about $47,000) with BaaS. The six/seven-seat versions run RMB 298,800-338,800 (about $44,600-$50,600) with BaaS, or RMB 406,800-446,800 (about $60,700-$66,700) outright. BaaS customers pay a monthly battery rental of RMB 1,128 (about $168). All prices are converted at about 6.70 CNY per USD. As of September 2026 the ES8 is sold in China only, with no European launch date announced.
How It Compares
Against its own sibling, the NIO ES9, the ES8 offers identical 697 hp for roughly $17,000 less on BaaS terms (RMB 274,800 versus RMB 390,000), with a shorter body (5,280 mm versus 5,365 mm) but a wider choice of layouts — five, six or seven seats, where the ES9 is six-seat only. The ZEEKR 9X is the outright power king with its tri-motor 1,381 hp EREV setup, but that's a fundamentally different proposition — a range-extender chasing outright thrust rather than NIO's battery-swap convenience. The Leapmotor D19 BEV is cheaper than the ES8's BaaS entry price and offers more CLTC range (720 km on the dual-motor version, with the 724 hp tri-motor version at 680 km), but it has no battery-swap network. For buyers who value NIO's charging ecosystem and want a luxury cabin without German prices, the ES8 remains the segment's most complete package.
- 697 hp and a 3.97s sprint from about $41,000 (RMB 274,800) with BaaS (about $57,100 / RMB 382,800 with the battery included)
- Nappa leather, 27-speaker Dolby Atmos audio and a 38-inch AR-HUD in the cabin
- About 3-minute battery swaps at more than 4,000 NIO stations across China
- Five-seat version adds a 1,334L boot and 655 km of CLTC range
- Sold in China only for now, with no confirmed European or North American launch date
- BaaS pricing requires an ongoing monthly battery rental (RMB 1,128, about $168) on top of the purchase price
The NIO ES8 earned its place as China's best-selling large SUV by nailing the fundamentals: 697 hp, a luxury-grade cabin, in-house driver-assistance hardware with three LiDAR units and a battery-swap network no rival can replicate. The five-seat version sharpens that pitch further — more cargo space, a lower entry price and a longer 655 km CLTC range. If you can live with China-only availability, this is a lot of technology and comfort for about $41,000 (RMB 274,800) with BaaS, or about $57,100 (RMB 382,800) with the battery included.
