2027 BYD Atto 8: Up to 764 hp, Over 650 km WLTP, 9-Min Flash Charging
The BYD Atto 8 is a seven-seat battery-electric SUV that BYD showed to the public at the Paris Motor Show on 12 October 2026, presented by BYD executive vice president Stella Li. It is the European version of the car sold in China as the Tang L EV, and BYD calls it the first BYD model in Europe with the second-generation Blade Battery and its first vehicle in Europe with Flash Charging. The battery is a 115 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack that BYD says can go from 10 to 97 percent in nine minutes at a compatible charger. Two versions are planned: the Design RWD with a single rear motor of 462 PS (about 456 hp) and a WLTP range of 405 miles (about 652 km), and the Excellence AWD with a second motor on the front axle for 775 PS (570 kW, about 764 hp) and a 4.6 second sprint from 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h). European sales start in the first quarter of 2027, and BYD has not announced a European price yet.
Performance & Specs
The Design RWD uses one electric motor on the rear axle that BYD rates at 462 PS (about 340 kW, or 456 hp) and 365 Nm, and the company quotes 0 to 62 mph in 8.0 seconds. The Excellence AWD adds a front motor and lifts combined output to 775 PS and 775 Nm of torque. BYD gives that figure as 570 kW, which is 764 hp, and quotes 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.6 seconds. CarNewsChina, which photographed BYD's stage slide in Paris, also reports a top speed of 240 km/h; BYD's release does not state one. (PS is the metric horsepower, about 1.4 percent smaller than the imperial hp used here.) The figures were shown on the stage screen in Paris under the heading “the most powerful 7-seat SUV”, a claim BYD limits to power rather than acceleration, because the Audi SQ7 is quicker to 100 km/h at 4.1 seconds according to CarNewsChina.
Range falls with the second motor. BYD publishes its WLTP combined figures in miles: 405 miles (about 652 km) for the Design RWD and 374 miles (about 602 km) as a maximum for the Excellence AWD. Both figures are combined WLTP values for the European specification, so they cannot be compared directly with the CLTC figures used for the China-market car. The battery capacity of 115 kWh is the nominal figure given by BYD, and neither gross nor usable capacity has been split out in the material published so far, which means a consumption figure cannot be calculated reliably yet.

At 5,040 mm long, 1,996 mm wide and 1,760 mm high on a 2,950 mm wheelbase, the Atto 8 is a full-size SUV. Europe gets the seven-seat layout with two individual seats in the third row (a 2+3+2 arrangement). Luggage space is 270 litres with all seven seats in use, which Auto Express compares with 333 litres in the Kia EV9 and 299 litres in the Skoda Peaq. With the second and third rows folded the load space grows to 1,960 litres, and a 136 litre front boot under the bonnet is opened by a double tap, according to CarNewsChina. The tailgate is power-operated and uses what CarNewsChina describes as projection activation.

Charging & Battery
Flash Charging is the headline of the European launch. BYD says the 115 kWh battery can charge from 10 to 70 percent in five minutes and from 10 to 97 percent in nine minutes, and that a cold battery at -30 °C takes 12 minutes to go from 20 to 97 percent, roughly three minutes longer than at normal temperature. These times depend on a compatible BYD Flash Charging station, and BYD plans 3,000 of them across Europe by the end of 2027. BYD has not published a peak charging power or a standard 10-80 percent time for the Atto 8, and it has not stated the AC charging rate for the European version, so the quoted times should be read as best-case figures under BYD's own test conditions.
The battery is BYD's second-generation Blade cell, which the company presented in March 2026 with the same 10-70 percent in five minutes and 10-97 percent in nine minutes claims. For a buyer the practical point is that the nine-minute figure needs a Flash Charging station, and BYD is still building its European network, so ordinary public DC chargers will be slower. Until the Flash Charging network grows, the Atto 8 will mostly be charged at conventional DC and AC points.

Design & Interior
The Atto 8 shares its body with the Tang L, a long, upright SUV with a slim light bar across the nose, sharply cut lower air intakes, a roof-mounted sensor pod and a full-width light signature at the rear. The Chinese car is the BYD dynasty-series model and the European version carries the Atto name that BYD uses for its export range. Inside, the Atto 8 has a 15.6-inch central touchscreen running Google built in, a 10.25-inch digital driver display and a standard head-up display. Genuine leather covers every seat, and the front seats and the outer seats of the second row are heated, ventilated and offer massage. There is tri-zone climate control, dual wireless phone chargers and a large panoramic glass roof. The Design RWD has a 10-speaker audio system, while the Excellence AWD gets a 21-speaker DiSound system and a front-mounted refrigerator that Auto Express says can cool to -6 °C or warm to 50 °C.
The choice between the two trims is therefore about both performance and equipment. The rear-drive Design offers the longest range at 405 miles (about 652 km) and a gentler 8.0 second 0 to 62 mph time, while the Excellence adds the second motor, the bigger speaker system and the fridge in exchange for about 50 km less WLTP range.
Technology & Features
The Google-based infotainment system is the most visible change for European buyers, with Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Google Play Store available on the 15.6-inch screen. The 26-inch head-up display, wireless phone charging and a gesture-operated tailgate round out the cabin technology that has been confirmed. BYD has not yet listed the European software features, over-the-air update policy or digital key support, and those details will likely arrive with the full specification and price list before sales begin in the first quarter of 2027.
Safety & ADAS
BYD has not published the European safety equipment list, the driver-assistance package or any Euro NCAP result for the Atto 8. A roof-mounted sensor pod is visible on the car shown in Paris, but BYD has not said which assistance functions the European car will offer or what automation level it will claim. For that reason this article does not list ADAS features and will be updated once the specification is released.

Pricing & Availability
BYD has not announced a price for the Atto 8 in any European market. Sales start in the first quarter of 2027, according to CarNewsChina and Fleet News, and UK press reports give the arrival in the UK as early 2027 (Auto Express) or spring 2027 (EV Fleet World), with the Design RWD and Excellence AWD as the two versions. In China the equivalent Tang L EV is listed at CNY 222,800 to 272,800, which is about $33,200 to $40,700 at 6.7048 yuan to the dollar, according to CarNewsChina, the only outlet found quoting that range, so it should be treated as an indicative home-market price rather than a guide to European pricing. The Tang L went on sale in China in April 2025 and the European car differs from the China-market EV in battery and output.
The Atto 8 name is not exclusive to the electric car. In other markets BYD uses Atto 8, or Sealion 8 in Australia and several Asian markets, for a seven-seat plug-in hybrid version of the same body, so figures for the plug-in hybrid Atto 8 sold in South Africa or the Gulf states do not apply to the European battery-electric version. It is also a different car from the BYD Datang (marketed in English as the Great Tang), which is a longer flagship launched in China in 2026 with a 3,130 mm wheelbase and its own battery and power figures.
How It Compares
Among its likely European rivals the Atto 8 leads on power by a wide margin. The Kia EV9 in its all-wheel-drive GT-line version has 283 kW (385 PS, about 380 hp) and up to 497 km WLTP according to Kia Germany, with 10-80 percent charging in about 24 minutes, so the BYD has roughly twice the output and a longer maximum WLTP range in either drive layout (about 602 and 652 km against 563 km for the rear-drive EV9), though Kia's entry EV9 already has a published German price of €63,690. The Skoda Peaq is cheaper, with 300 hp in the 90x and 647 km WLTP in the rear-drive Peaq 90 from €54,550, but its boot is the 299 litres that Auto Express cites against the BYD's 270 litres. BYD's own Datang is a separate, larger China-market flagship with 784 hp, and its CLTC range of up to 950 km is not comparable with WLTP figures. Because BYD has not announced a European price, the real test will be whether the Atto 8 undercuts the EV9 once pricing is released.
- Up to 570 kW (764 hp) and 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds in the Excellence AWD, with a WLTP range of over 650 km available in the Design RWD
- 10-97% in 9 minutes on BYD's Flash Charging stations, and 20-97% in 12 minutes at -30 °C
- Seven genuine seats on a 2,950 mm wheelbase with 1,960 L of load space and a 136 L front boot
- No European price, peak charging power, AC rate or safety and driver-assistance list yet, so the value case cannot be judged
- The headline charging times depend on Flash Charging stations that BYD plans to build (3,000 in Europe by the end of 2027), and the 270 L seven-seat boot is smaller than the Kia EV9's 333 L
The Atto 8 is BYD's boldest European move yet: a big seven-seat electric SUV with up to 764 hp, a 115 kWh battery and charging times that no current European rival matches on paper. Its weaknesses are mostly things BYD has not said yet, notably the price, the peak charging rate and the safety equipment. Families who want a three-row EV with real performance should keep it on the shortlist for early 2027, but the decision against the Kia EV9 and Skoda Peaq will come down to the price and to how many Flash Charging stations are open near them.
