The GWM ORA 5 is the compact SUV that carries Great Wall Motor's retro-styled ORA badge into the European mainstream, and it is sold with a choice of powertrains rather than as an electric-only car. This article covers the two electrified versions. The full hybrid (HEV) pairs a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with a 140 kW electric motor for 164 kW (223 PS, about 220 hp) of system power and a WLTP fuel consumption of 5.1 l/100 km. The battery-electric version (BEV) has a 58.3 kWh LFP battery, 150 kW (204 PS, about 201 hp) and up to 435 km of WLTP range. A petrol-only version also exists but is outside the scope of this report. In Germany GWM lists the hybrid from EUR 28,990 for the Premium trim, with a EUR 2,000 launch discount valid until 31 December 2026, while the BEV is marked “coming soon” and has no German price yet. In Israel the hybrid went on sale in June 2026 through the importer Kalmobil from NIS 139,900.
Performance & Specs
The hybrid is GWM's Dedicated Hybrid Technology (DHT) in a compact format. A 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine makes 110 kW (150 PS, about 148 hp) and a separate electric motor makes 140 kW (190 PS, about 188 hp); together the system delivers 164 kW (223 PS, about 220 hp) and 476 Nm of torque. GWM quotes 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 185 km/h. The transmission is a two-speed hybrid gearbox, and a 1.09 kWh lithium-ion battery is small enough that the car cannot be plugged in: this is a self-charging full hybrid, not a plug-in. GWM says six operating modes switch automatically between electric driving, series and parallel hybrid operation, direct engine drive and energy recovery, and that the electric motor can disengage at higher speeds to save fuel.
The official WLTP combined figures for the hybrid are 5.1 l/100 km and 117 g/km of CO2, and GWM claims up to 1,000 km from a tank. That is consistent with the 55-litre tank reported by Israeli outlets, since 55 litres at 5.1 l/100 km works out at roughly 1,080 km before real-world losses. A note on units: Germany lists 223 PS, the metric horsepower, while Israeli outlets print 223 “hp” for the same 164 kW system. Converted properly, 164 kW is about 220 hp, which is the figure used here. The Israeli unit also quotes 0-100 km/h in 7.8 seconds against 7.7 seconds in Germany, a small difference between the two markets' published numbers.
The BEV uses a permanent-magnet synchronous motor rated at 150 kW (204 PS, about 201 hp) and 260 Nm. GWM lists 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds, a top speed of 170 km/h and WLTP consumption of 15.5 kWh/100 km. Italian outlet Quotidiano Motori quotes a peak of 205 CV for the same motor, a rounding difference from Germany's 204 PS. The BEV is not yet on sale in Germany, so its figures come from GWM Germany's model page rather than a completed homologation list.

At 4,471 mm long and 1,833 mm wide, the ORA 5 sits in the heart of the compact SUV class, but its 2,720 mm wheelbase is long for the size, which GWM uses as the basis for its claim of generous rear legroom. The car has five seats and a two-level boot floor. Luggage volume depends on the powertrain: 390 litres to the parcel shelf and 1,088 litres with the rear seats folded for the hybrid, and 422 to 1,120 litres for the BEV. The turning circle is 10.9 metres, and braked towing capacity is 750 kg for the hybrid and the BEV. GWM lists 33 storage compartments in the cabin.
According to GWM, the ORA 5 SUV is the first of three body styles, and electrive reports that a hatchback and an estate will follow. Those bodies have no dates or specifications yet, so the numbers above apply to the SUV only.

Charging & Battery
The hybrid has nothing to plug in: its 1.09 kWh battery is recharged by the engine and by braking. Only the BEV charges from the grid. GWM Germany lists a 58.3 kWh LFP battery, 11 kW AC charging and a maximum of 120 kW DC, with a 10-80% charge in about 30 minutes, noting that real times depend on battery size, outside temperature, cable and charger. A WLTP combined range of up to 435 km goes with an official consumption of 15.5 kWh/100 km; Italian press adds a WLTP urban range of 603 km and an 11 kW AC charge of about 6.6 hours. The consumption figure is measured at the socket, which would explain why it is higher than 58.3 kWh divided by 435 km suggests.
The BEV carries GWM's 8-year, 160,000 km battery warranty in Germany. GWM Germany has not announced the BEV's price and says only that it is “coming soon”; German sources differ on timing: mobiFlip reports late autumn 2026, while ADAC says the BEV follows in early 2027 (its own model table lists 11/26).
| BATTERY | BEV 58.3 kWh LFP; HEV 1.09 kWh Li-ion (self-charging) |

Design & Interior
The ORA 5 keeps the retro look of the ORA brand: large oval LED headlights, flowing body lines and a short, rounded front end. According to GWM and its distributors, the design won “Design of the Year” in the product design (automobiles and vehicles) category at the 2025 London Design Awards. Standard equipment on both German trims includes 18-inch alloy wheels, silver roof rails and LED headlights with high-beam assist. There are seven paint colours: Dover White (solid, no extra cost), Night Black, Glacier Grey, Forest Green and Ayers Grey (metallic), and Cloud White and Sea Blue (solid), with any other colour at extra cost.
Inside, GWM promises minimalist surfaces with retro details. The Premium trim has cloth seats and the Luxury trim has imitation-leather upholstery, and a beige and brown interior is offered on the Luxury trim only, while both trims offer a dark grey cabin. The centrepiece is a 14.6-inch multimedia screen next to a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. In Israel the Signature trim adds a panoramic sunroof, ventilated and heated seats, a power tailgate, a heated steering wheel and 50 W wireless charging, according to Cartube.
Technology & Features
The infotainment runs on Coffee OS 3, GWM's latest operating system, with a customisable home screen, online navigation, an app store and intelligent voice control. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the system supports wireless charging, ambient lighting and a sound system, depending on the trim. A 360-degree surround camera is part of the standard package.
Safety & ADAS
GWM fits more than 20 driver assistance systems as standard, alongside seven airbags. The German list includes adaptive cruise control, an intelligent cruise assist that combines distance control with lane centring, traffic jam assist, emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, a junction turning assist, front and rear cross-traffic alert with emergency braking, blind-spot warning, lane change assist, door-opening warning, a driver monitoring system and traffic sign recognition. GWM does not state an SAE automation level and says the systems work only within their technical limits. We found no Euro NCAP result for the ORA 5, and the Israeli site auto.co.il lists it as not tested by Euro NCAP.

Pricing & Availability
GWM Germany announced the ORA 5 for Germany in April 2026, and the petrol and hybrid versions have a German market launch of August 2026. For the hybrid, the list price (unverbindliche Preisempfehlung) is EUR 28,990 for the Premium trim and EUR 31,490 for the Luxury trim, before delivery costs; at the current exchange rate (EUR 1 = USD 1.1269 on 6 October 2026) that is about $32,669 and $35,486. A EUR 2,000 launch discount valid until 31 December 2026, while stock lasts, brings the Premium to EUR 26,990 and the Luxury to EUR 29,490. The cheapest ORA 5 in Germany is the petrol version, at EUR 26,990 list and EUR 24,990 with the same discount, and GWM gives all versions a 7-year or 150,000 km warranty.
Italy publishes its own price list: Quotidiano Motori reports the Hi2 hybrid from EUR 28,600 (Origin trim) and EUR 30,600 (Premium), and the BEV from EUR 36,000 and EUR 38,000, figures that alvolante.it also gives. The Italian prices are turnkey, and some outlets add about EUR 665 for registration on top. In Israel, Kalmobil launched the hybrid on 22 June 2026 in two trims: Vibe at NIS 139,900 (about $45,898 at USD 1 = NIS 3.05) and Signature at NIS 148,900 (about $48,851), with a separate registration fee of NIS 1,745, per auto.co.il. Israeli warranty is 6 years for the car and 8 years or 150,000 km for the battery, and the importer Kalmobil's BEV (58.3 kWh) is reported for early 2027, price not announced (auto.co.il, 4 August 2026).
How It Compares
The Haval Dargo HEV is the closest like-for-like hybrid on our site: another GWM-family non-plug-in full hybrid with a two-speed DHT, quoted at 244 hp in the China-market version against 220 hp for the ORA 5, and at a China guide price of $17,883 (CNY 119,900) against Germany's EUR 28,990. China prices and European prices exclude and include different taxes, and the Dargo's 1,115 km is a WLTC figure, so neither number compares directly with the ORA 5's WLTP consumption. For the BEV, the Omoda 5 EV is a useful European reference: 208 hp and 430 km WLTP against the ORA 5's 201 hp and 435 km, with the Omoda priced from $43,884 (GBP 33,055) in the UK. GWM has not published a German price for its BEV, so the price comparison remains open until it does.
- Self-charging hybrid with 164 kW (220 hp), 5.1 l/100 km WLTP and up to 1,000 km per tank, from EUR 28,990 in Germany
- BEV option with a 58.3 kWh LFP battery, up to 435 km WLTP and 120 kW DC charging
- Long warranty: 7 years / 150,000 km for the car and 8 years / 160,000 km for the battery in Germany, with more than 20 assistance systems and 7 airbags as standard
- No German price or confirmed on-sale date for the BEV yet; GWM says only “coming soon”; mobiFlip reported late autumn 2026 and ADAC early 2027
- Small boot for the class in hybrid form (390 litres) and a braked towing limit of only 750 kg for both electrified versions
The ORA 5 hybrid is the version to look at first: 220 hp, 5.1 l/100 km on the WLTP cycle and a claimed 1,000 km per tank for EUR 28,990 in Germany or NIS 139,900 in Israel, with a launch discount in Germany until the end of 2026. The BEV looks competitive on paper with 435 km WLTP and 120 kW DC charging, but without a German price and with an unconfirmed start (reported for late autumn 2026 or early 2027) it is a version to wait for, not to order today. Boot size and a Euro NCAP result are the open questions, so shoppers should check the importer's current price list and wait for crash-test data before committing.
